I wouldn't discount the idea that it wasn't so much physically hard, but it might have been actually terrifying for some of your students. It might be easier to say that it is a tough climb than that you're afraid you'll be stuck in the woods/side of a mountain and not be able to get home.

I've been hosting family hikes (mostly moms and their kids under 5) for a few years now, and some of our members have been very uncomfortable being outside when they started. It's a big parenting thing now to let your children be outside and "connected to nature" so they are trying. But there is a level of fear sometimes because their experience is so limited. It's magnified by taking babies into the desert, but they just don't have any practice doing something like that.

I'm not some kind of master outdoorswoman, but growing up in a rural area, there wasn't much alternative entertainment.

ETA: And, like you, I don't consider most of our hikes very challenging as hikes. Usually less than 2 miles, a quarter of mine are accessible for strollers, most with good trail markings and on-site paper maps, etc. I'm not talking all-day backcountry hikes with route-finding, no toilets, and need for water-purification. There might be an opportunity to see potentially dangerous wildlife even in town, but it's little kids in the outdoors, so haha. In 3 years, we've seen one rattlesnake, a handful of "wild" horses and millions of rabbits and lizards. Singing and stomping down the trail and regular meltdowns protect us from basically all animals.

A friend and I were just chilling today. We ended up wandering around WalMart because she had some last minute back-to-school shopping to do. I saw this thing and was creeped out by it.

Belgium is weirder than that ... I was in a bar in Brussels many years ago and a bunch of students brought in a goldfish. And started passing it from glass to mouth to glass around the table.

So, a couple of the students who work on the Grounds Crew encountered a snake down by the creek, and decided to capture it. They sent me an e-mail, because they wanted me to identify it for them; they were so proud of themselves for having captured it instead of killing it.

Now, I've been conducting a sort of campaign since I got here to discourage students from killing snakes. You see, every time they mow the grassy areas near the creek, they encounter Water Snakes (Nerodia sipedon) -- and the typical response is to kill said snakes.

I disapprove, and have let it be known about the campus, since the Water Snakes are perfectly harmless. Nonetheless, the working assumption around here is that any snake found near water is a Water Moccasin (Agkistrodon piscivorus; they don't even live in this part of the country), and any snake found away from water is a Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix; they do live around here, but they're a.) very distinctive and easily-recognizable, and b.) far rarer than most people seem to think).

Anyway, these two students were quite proud of themselves for capturing the snake instead of doing the normal thing and killing it, and they wanted me to identify it to confirm that it was indeed a harmless species. Naturally, since I want to encourage people not to kill every snake they encounter, I was happy to oblige.

Sure enough, it turned out that they had a young Water Snake. Before I could tell them what it was, however, one of them said, "It bit me when I picked it up; should I be concerned?".

I explained that though this species is harmless, it's not an especially good idea to pick up a snake when you don't even know whether or not it's venomous.
