One small step for Uthgar. One giant leap backward for civilization as we know it.

Congratulations Uthgar!
Aren't you afraid that the name Inara might influence her future career choice?

Me too, may we have the story or meaning behind it, if there is any beyond "it's pretty"?

Re: Member News Discussion
Actually, Mrs. KA found it on the internet and I agreed that it was great name. Then afterwards we remembered that it was the name of the courtesan on Firefly. (we aren't too concerned about the Inara Serra connotation actually, since we already figure that her older sister Ellie will quite likely strip her way through college. So having already come terms with that...)
As it turns out Inara also means "illuminating, shining" in Arabic. Then there was also a Hittite goddess named Inara, she's kind of a combination of the Greek goddesses Artemis and Persephone.
We chose it because it is a very pretty name, it's not über-popular but unique while not being ridiculously so, and probably most of all it doesn't sound like any of our other kids' names.
We still haven't settled on her middle name(s). Initially I wanted to name her Quasar, but that got the kabosh from the boss for first name though it's still a contenda for middle name. There are several Quenya/Numenorean names I really like, like Silmariën, Elentári, and Rían.
And then there's my grandmother's name, Julia.
Maybe a combination. I like Julia Rían...not approved by yet though
Have to figure out something soon though, the paperwork must be submitted before she leaves tomorrow morning.

I didn't want to be the first to mention the Firefly angle, but I did think of that right away. I adored the character, so it's not biggy. That, and it is an absolutely beautiful name.

Sounds good Smilin, much better than Alaska (which is the Siberian's Siberia).
Good luck.

Re: Member News Discussion
Inara is a lovely sound, and so is Julia. I rather fancy names that are just beautiful to say. I don't know how one says Rían, but a number of words in High Elvish are pretty, too.
I've never had a lovely sounding name, so when I was a kid I used to imagine names that I would have preferred instead.

Re: Member News Discussion
How about Serra for a middle name for Inara? Too Firefly? I always figured I'd name my daughter Kira Nerys if I had one. To tie in the "first and last name of a sci-fi character as first and middle name of child" theme.
Smilin, congrats! But I'm sorry it wasn't California. Sorry for me, I mean.
