I love sleep ...
... I hate my bed. Every morning I wake up with an ache in another part of my body. First it was one of my shoulders, which was probably from me supporting my head at night. Now, it's my neck ... and it's horrible. I can barely turn my neck to the left, and by mid afternoon, the pain typically isn't gone and I start to develop headaches.
It sucks.
At any rate ... with tax time upon me, I think I might be able to splurge for a new mattress. What type of mattress do people here have, which helps them get a DECENT NIGHTS SLEEP?

Re: I love sleep ...
I don't have one, personally, but I do like the "adjustable" mattresses (those "what's your number" thingies, I forget the name). They're fairly comfortable and can be set more or less exactly to "just right," which is invariably a hit and miss with traditional mattresses (more the latter, especially over time as my monstrous habitus crushes the will to remain firm out of the poor thing).
Edit: I have recently found that not piling up pillows, which is a psychological comfort thing, has put an end (knocks on wood) to stiff shoulders and neck in the morning.

I have a nice Sealy Posturpedic with pillowtop. It's comfy but it's getting on in years (over a decade old now). There are some spots where the springs make their presence felt. If I had the cash, I'd get one of them memory foam badboys.

We've got one of those Swedish memory foam jobbies. I'm not 100% sold on them, they're a bit hot during warm weather because you sink down into the foam, but they are pretty comfy.

Re: I love sleep ...
I only sleep well on a fairly hard futon. It is 8 inches and has a latex core. I also have a wool pillow which is the best thing ever.
I hesitate to recommend my bedding for anyone one else though, most people hate my bed.

Some of my best sleep was on a futon. A 10:1 ratio of hard to comfy is the best mattress.

Re: I love sleep ...
Yeah, I can see that, Ding. Thanks.
Nix on the memory foam for me. I sleep hot anyway; I don't need additional means of doing so.
I've an older Sealy Posturpedic. It was okay for a while, but it's starting to show it's age. I had to quit watching TV while laying on my anterior side and propping my chin up on my elbowes...it will guarantee sore lower back muscles the next day.
I'd consider one of those "adjustable firmness" units Uthgar is babbling about, but I'm afraid I'd keel over from sticker shock.
Do not....I repeat: Do not get yourself a waterbed. It will go from bad to worse.

I hate futon mattresses. The last time I slept on one, I had the most miserable night in years. I could feel the concrete floor below and at my age and condition, it's a helluva long ways up from the floor, and gravity is stronger than it was when I was a young pup.

Re: I love sleep ...
I currently have a futon on top of a boxspring.
The futon's a full king (7'x7', I think that comes out to) that we've had for probably 15 years. I got a king frame and boxspring to put under it.

Re: I love sleep ...
I third the latex foam being very comfy and too warm after a few hours. I put a pillow top cotton mattress cover on it. That was a good compromise, but it still kind of 'dents' in after sleeping on it for a month or two. King size mattresses are hard to rotate a lot. I think I'm going with a normal mattress with a big ol pillow top on it next time.

Yep, the Sleep Number bed is a great thing. My back problems have disappeared; now if only my snoring would stop interrupting my good night's sleep.

Heh...It's a good thing I'm fairly deaf. I take my hearing aids off at night, naturally, which helps me sleep, as my bed partner has a snore that, once under way, sounds close to a idlling chainsaw. A BIG idling chainsaw.

Re: I love sleep ...
Hmmm...The only thing I've heard that about is silk.
Wool does breathe, and I'll attest that I wore a tropical weight wool suit to an outdoor wedding in 107º F weather in Vegas.
However, that price is off-putting. How does it wash?

Re: I love sleep ...
I've never had one, looks like it needs steam cleaning and there are quite a few places that make them, so prices vary.

Re: I love sleep ...
We have one of those combination pillow-top mattress & memory foam thingies. But ours seems to have a poor memory, 'cause it retains dents just fine. And as mentioned already, spinning a king-sized mattress, especially one like ours that has more components than a DC-10, is not terribly easy. It can't be flipped since the pillowtop is only on, well, the top.
Still, it suits most nights and doesn't get too hot. I've been eyeing one of those all-foam Swedish things, but the prohibitive pricetag and now the reports that it retains heat will probably continue to keep me away.
