One of my friends is a jewelry designer in Toronto. This is her latest creation. I want to be rich enough to have her design all my jewelry.

I love that floating setting for the stone and the clean contemporary look of the ring.
If that's a sapphire then it is a super nice one I could never ever afford, or the photographer is awesomely amazing to capture that angle which makes it look unaffordable...is it something else?
It's a sapphire, 1.36 carat. The nice thing about the company she works for is they trace all their stones from the source to make sure they are fairly traded. Also, the pretty. Here's some more of their work, but I'm not sure which were made by Kathleenios.

The membership of The Society of Jewellery Historians consists of archaeologists, museum specialists, collectors, art historians, dealers, gemmologists, practising jewellers and designers, scientists and restorers, and anyone who is simply interested in the subject. Around one-third of members live outside the UK. The membership year lasts from October to the following September.
It's a corsage ornament...how awesome is that term?
Have I mentioned that I am crazy about hair jewels? Because I am. I am completely obsessed with hair-based ornaments of any kind, from snoods to headbands to combs. Look what I just found while research obsessing through the Walters Art Museum's collection of ivory pieces: an orchid comb by René Lalique. Have I mentioned I am also obsessed with Lalique? Because I am. I know I've mentioned my love of enamel before. So, yeah, basically, I am totally all over the place right now.
Clicky for a giant version so you can see the incredible ombre' effect of the enamel, the diamonds down the central vein of the leaves and the holyfuckingshit carving of the orchid.
Quote:
This orchid comb is carved from a single piece of ivory and is set on a gold stem striped with brown enamel. Three leaves extend from the base of the blossom rendered in "plique-ŕ-jour" enamel graduated in hue from delicate peach to pale olive. The central vein of each leaf begins with a short section of light grey enamel and is followed by a row of graduated diamonds. Brown enamel covers portions of the leaves, both front and back. The stem is attached by a gold hinge to a three-pronged horn comb.
I have been really into wearing hair jewelry lately. I bought some from a Soho kiosk on impulse. Then I got buyer's remorse and started wearing them all the time to justify the expense. I started liking them so much that I bought more to got with other colored outfits rather than not wear one. It's a vicious cycle, but they are all Swarovski Crystal and guaranteed for life so when a crystal falls out I just take it to the mall and they fix it on the spot.
I have this one in blue and green. It's probably my favorite.

I know I'm any kind of great prize, but I guess I'm aright. There are worse people, anyway. A lot of those worse people have a shitload of money, is the thing, so odds are this is going to end up on one of their fingers instead of mine. I just can't see that as righteous. Please to smite with furious anger or whatever it takes to get that ring where it belongs: in my warm, slightly clammy, cupped hand.
Brooke Astor's estate is having a garage sale at Sotheby's right now. The jewelry starts here and goes to the end of the catalogue. Most of it is not my bag -- she tended to chase the chunk -- but it's fun to flip through and see where she went into Cartier or Van Cleef & Arpels and bought one piece in four different stones. She was all "I want that in blue, red, white and green, kthxplz."
EXCUSE ME LADYSHEA. How come you never told me about blue amber? It's only found in the Dominican Republic and it's ridiculously beautiful. Under artificial light or direct sunlight it looks blue. Held up to the light it's the amber color of regular amber. This is the same stone:
One thing I love about pearls is how different they look against different people's skin. They're like perfume in that they truly form a relationship with their wearer. I remember my friend Silvia picking up some of my mother's pearls which looked milky white on Mom (she's pale as a ghost) but when wrapped around Silvia's olive hand they suddenly glowed champagne.
Also, I saw the most extraordinary pearl and diamond Tiffany necklace on Antiques Roadshow last week. The pearls are all natural, but they are amazingly spherical and so perfectly paired it's hard to believe they're not cultured. It must have taken the designer months, maybe years, to find them all. Incredibly piece.
