If there were more Christians like Ankakuk around, we'd never get to have these hilarious debating hijinks on the interwebs. Don't encourage him, or things will turn all reasonable, cogent, and boring.

It takes a particularly virulent strain of fundamentalist delusion to pin the Catholic Church's abuses on idolatry. Or just simple stupidity.
|
The worship of God is a personal and private matter, not to be transferred to some external object, imbued with some special power, which can then be manipulated by the head buggers of the church who, waste no time transferring this power to themselves and, of course justify all manner of evil and corruption by it. Basically they've relieved you from finding God for yourself, and set you and everyone else up (as slaves) to do the Church's bidding. At the very least it becomes a big distraction, that draws attention solely to the Church, instead of the God (who exists as a spirit) inside you. Meaning it has nothing to do with God.
But no, there's plenty of finger pointing to go around for everyone. This just happens to be the Roman Catholic Church's particular twist. And no, I don't think the Church (although it's really not a church at all) would have been nearly as successful without its appeal to idol worship.

Yeah, because we really have no choice ... so long as we maintain the notion that human experience is grounded in oblivion. In which case we can pretty much believe what we like, because it's all a fantasy.

I did and, where the one contains a list the length of my arm, the other, which precedes it, is much more concise and clearly delineates between the ten ... except of course where the Roman Catholics got a hold of it and (conveniently) omitted the second.
Also, apparently there's a third reference in Deuteronomy 5:6–21, which basically reiterates the one I mentioned.
By the way, you forgot to add the period to your second sentence there. Tsk tsk ...

Actually, nothing as far as I'm concerned, at least in terms of time and space. But, to the strict materialist, what else have you got ... in terms of origin?
|
For good and evil? Me. You. Humans in general. That's where those constructs come from.
|
No, I'm speaking of the tiniest of pee holes from which the whole Universe sprang. Unless of course you don't actually believe human thought and mental constructs originated there, in which case I might actually agree. That it isn't to say they don't ultimately come from the same place, however ... beyond time and space perhaps? If not, we wouldn't be able to communicate. I mean if that's what you prefer to call our little exchange here.

I understand Angakuk has a certain knack for saying things other folks like to hear. But, that just makes him popular, depending on which side he chooses.

I used to know more than your "average" Christian, but I had a very religious roommate in college and wound up hanging out with a lot of evangelical Christian folk. Some worked pretty hard to try to convert me. I had a lot of experience with Christian theology and culture, especially with Evangelicals.
That's all past. I used to know a lot, read the whole Bible and all that, but that knowledge is fading. I haven't felt like debating the finer points of Christian theology for 10 years or longer, and I don't feel the need to keep it up.

Angakuk has a knack for actually backing up what he has to say in stead of drifting from one vague mystical claim to another without ever saying anything of substance.

No, it's about atheist quotations. If Christians are offended that's the way the cookie crumbles.
