Default Mozilla Composer Sucks

Mozilla Composer is the most painfully useless piece of shit WYSIWYG web design software I have ever had the misfortune to use.

That is all.

Okay, good point. I should've said it's one of the most painfully useless piece of shit WYSIWYG editors. :D

Speaking of which, is there a really good open source WYSIWYG editor out there?

Don't know... my employer doesn't let us use open source software, so I'm accustomed to Dreamweaver. Which I actually think is pretty good... well, compared to FrontPage, anyway, which we are forced to use on account of our enterprise SharePoint deployment. :glare:

I haven't heard of one, not a standalone application anyway. There's a couple of halfway decent javascript widgets, but they're probably more suited to dumping into a web-based CMS or forum software than for building whole pages or sites.

Or you could do it like me, the old-fashioned way... carving your html onto stone tablets :P

I don't mind doing pages on stone tablets for the most part, but I find that a WYSIWYG editor saves me a lot of time formatting tables, for example.

Why? Have employees that used non-proprietary software in the past started going glowy-eyed and spouting communist ideals? Or is it just too damn stable for them?

I think it's actually some sort of blood oath between our execs and Bill Gates, but I don't want to speculate lest I end up deposed in some antitrust suit. :P

I hear ya. Being a curious type I had a quick look on sourceforge, but nothing cropped up. I only spent less than 10 minutes though, so it might be worth looking again. There certainly ought to be an open source wysiwyg editor - it seems like a prime candidate. Doesn't mean it exists though.

I find packages.gentoo.org more useful, since it lists more popular programs and gives you a better idea of how stable they are. If there's a "standard" open-source something or other it'll be in there. Doesn't have everything, but in this case a search for "web editor" got exactly one hit -- Nvu, an open-source editor like dreamweaver for mac, linux, and windows. Haven't used it, myself, I edit webpages in rawtext, but it looks promising.

Thanks for the link Corona. Unfortunately I found that one too, downloaded and installed it and found that it is, as far as I can tell, Mozilla Composer with a different skin. :(

So what's so horrible about Mozilla Composer anyhow?

Possibly nothing that wouldn't be remedied by learning how to use it. :D

I was annoyed because I wish it was more intuitive. Imagine a simple table with four rows and two columns. It seems to me like you should be able to just click and drag an edge of one of the columns to adjust the column width, but you can't. Of course as I'm typing now it occurs to me that this is probably a limitation of HTML tables, not Composer.
