Welcome to the Freethought Forum
The lofty high Renaissance and marked mannerism. The heavy and ornate Baroque era, followed by the gentle Rococo. Harsh neo-classicism, rich romanticism, lush naturalism, stern realism, blurred impressionism. Heady surrealism, blockish cubism, postwar Dada, pointy-cornered art deco and cookie cutter Bauhaus. Let us skip the dreariness of the past half century and arrive finally at FF Style.

A thread in which Specious complains about Skeptoid
Feb 28, 2025 - 3:00 AM - by specious_reasons
I am bucking tradition and creating a new thread because I've complained about the Skeptoid podcast in the past, and I'm positive it will happen again. I haven't searched the forum, but I remember being annoyed with Brian Dunning's take on DDT and electric cars. Most commonly I find there's some white, middle-class, libertarian bias to some issues — especially when science doesn't point to a clear answer. Oh, and the wire fraud conviction, which I will bring up again later.

Note that I actually like the podcast. It just sometimes gets me very annoyed.

Today's complaint is about Skeptoid Podcast #977, A Dingo Ate My Baby.

Did you know that the phrase, "A Dingo Ate My Baby" has a dark history? That the Chamberlains suffered the dual tragedy of losing their baby to Australian wildlife and then being convicted of murdering her?

Actually, yes I did. I'm a little younger than Dunning, but I remember this as international news. I'm pretty sure I was aware that the Chamberlains were eventually cleared of the charges, if not entirely aware of all the details. Thankfully, this episode does give us a good overview of this tragic situation. It was nice to know all the details.

However, Dunning tells us, in a slightly scolding tone, "There are a lot of things everyone agrees probably aren't best to joke about, and this certainly qualifies. It's probably a lesson for all of us in taking that little bit of extra trouble to learn any true backstory there might be when we craft a joke or write a movie or a story."

Sorry, no. First of all, I am fairly certain the writers of Seinfeld and the Simpsons knew of the tragic backstory. Second, I am of the opinion that any subject matter is a target for humor, especially tragedies. Finally, "A dingo ate my baby!" is objectively funny, especially when said in a terrible Australian accent. Just... [Read More]

Are Trumpista's ok with this?
Jan 20, 2025 - 1:26 AM - by It's Me!
Trump talks about the US protecting cryptocurrency, and then he releases his own $TRUMP cryptocurrency, adding almost $25 billion to his own net worth in a matter of days. This is such a blatant cash grab and doesn't help his MAGA adherents one red cent. Does anyone who voted for him realize he's only doing this for the grift?
