Tsunami

I was just forwarded an email from a fellow officer giving some detailed information on the ground in Thailand. I know we have all been inundated with the sheer destruction of that day and of the numbers of the dead, but I just needed to share.

The latest count indicates that of the 2000 police officers in Banda Aceh only 500 survived.

He also provided an link to some unclassified photos of the area if anyone is interested in some detailed perspective.

Wow, those before and after shots are incredible. I can't even imagine such widespread death and destruction, much less coming so suddenly and quickly. :(

I swear, it's almost impossible for my brain to accept the magnitude of this thing. Those pictures are like a bad dream. Frickin' morons on II are talking about adopting orphans as if the initial crisis is over and they're already in rebuilding mode. It may take a year just to determine who all is dead or alive. I am gonna send more money.

I saw this story on the news today about one of those treacherous Christian groups called the Texas Baptist Men who are in Indonesia helping them put their shit back together. They said it will probably be months before all the neighborhoods have ready access to fresh water alone, much less other necessities.

It's like before and after pictures of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The scale is just incomprehensible. :(

This page is set up pretty well to show you some of the before/after effects of the tsunami.

Liv, I made a similar comment in the thread where I took this link from. It is really amazing.

Those pictures are hard to comprehend. Bridge spans broken and pushed inland show how powerful the surges were. The death toll is incomprehnsible. It is twice that of this city, and we are something like the fifth(?) biggest city in NZ.

I, too, have called the Red Cross to donate more money. :(
