Almond Milk!
I've been meaning to try it for some time (I like regular skim milk fine for cereal but was curious) and picked some up today, a vanilla flavor one. Yum! I drank some by itself and also used some as coffee creamer, which I think I will stick with it because it's not as sugary as the flavored varieties I usually use. I will try it with my cereal tomorrow morning and see how the flavor blends.
Since I wasn't sure if I would like it I just bought the least expensive brand, but would like to try other ones too if anyone has a recommendation (the prices are all pretty close anyway). The one I bought is the kind that is unrefrigerated on the shelf until opening in one of those cardboardy containers, but I think they have them in the refrigerated section too, I just happened to walk past it and think "hey, I've been meaning to try this" and was too lazy to walk back to the dairy case. I haven't really looked into what the supposed benefits are, if there are any alleged other than that it's good for people who are lactose intolerant, other than that it has marginally fewer calories than skim milk. As an aside, although I am not lactose intolerant, some of the rosacea sites I visit mention that dairy can be a trigger for some people, and although I haven't noticed a direct correlation that doesn't necessarily mean anything because I've had trouble determining ANY direct triggers except for a) red wine and b) excessive overheating (sweating/flushing during excercise). So I figure it's worth an experiment especially since it turns out I like how it tastes. |
Re: Almond Milk!
I bought some almond milk a short while ago, but didn't get around to trying it yet. Thanks for posting the thread. You reminded me that I want to do that.
I've been reading some recipes for breakfast drinks like one that includes blended almond milk, almond butter, magnesium powder and vanilla extract. In the recipe book I got this from, she says that nuts have magnesium and that magnesium is a relaxant, so if you want a relaxant, that's a benefit. |
Re: Almond Milk!
I have been giving my son almond milk. Unflavored usually, it does fine in oatmeal and works as a substitute for milk in pancakes. Other than that I haven't branched out. I've tried Pacific Organic and Diamond. They were both OK.

Re: Almond Milk!
I love almond milk, especially in oatmeal & tea (but I haven't used it in awhile). I've used Blue Diamond and Pacific Natural, I think I remember liking them both and preferring the regular over the vanilla flavor.

Re: Almond Milk!
My wife drinks the vanilla flavored almond milk almost exclusively. She's not lactose-intolerant; she just likes it. I think it's okay, but drank too much of it one day and it ... had an undesirable effect. :censored: I usually have either lowfat milk or soy milk.

Re: Almond Milk!
I've had hemp milk. I'm sure it was a placebo effect, but I used to have a glass of it right before going to the office.
Always made me feel so mellow during the commute. |
Re: Almond Milk!
I've been curious about almond milk for a while now. My big questions is: does it taste like cow's milk?
(my fingers got confused while I was typing 'milk for' and I typed 'milf' -- and then I giggled) |
Re: Almond Milk!
No. And I hope it doesn't become popular because it's really exhausting milking the herd of almonds.

Talk about itty bitty titties!
No, seriously, please talk about itty bitty titties.... |
Re: Almond Milk!
Though I disagreed with him on the aesthetic value, my grandfather was want to say on occasion, "Anything more than a mouthful is wasted." I never asked him if that applied to the male appendage as well. But, I digress. From what part of an almond does the milk express?

Re: Almond Milk!
The pointy part, of course.

Re: Almond Milk!
I see you're an experienced almond milker.

I have fond memories of the big almond roundups and almond drives up the Goodnight-Loving Trail. Yee-haw!

Re: Almond Milk!
I buy Blue Diamond Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla. Hardly any carbs, for this low-carber. I use it (occasionally, these days) to make protein shakes or ersatz eggnog. It tastes fine, but I was never a big milk drinker, anyways--mildly lactose intolerant.

Re: Almond Milk!
I like the original Almond Breeze (blue diamond). We've tried the Silk stuff but it seemed weirdly thick to me. I mostly use it just for cereal though.

Re: Almond Milk!
The unsweetened is fine on most cereals, but we get the sweetened stuff anyway. Blue Diamond is definitely better than the Silk stuff.
