Here's a letter to the editor from me in today's
Minnesota Star-Tribune.
Democrats' best case
The debate within the Democratic Party, at least as reported in the Aug. 28 article "Democrats waver in unifying stand against war in Iraq," misses the mark.
Democrats do not have to call for immediate withdrawal or even a withdrawal date to regain their credibility on national security.
All they have to do is reiterate the facts that are already clear: that President Bush lied about Saddam Hussein having banned weapons and ties to Al-Qaida, that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terrorism, and that Bush has all but abandoned the fight against Al-Qaida for an unrelated and far less urgent issue.
Then they must take these facts to their logical conclusion: that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should be impeached for lying to Congress and needlessly endangering the lives of American servicemen and women.
