"Happy Holidays" is a pee see invention that deletes the word "Christmas" from commercial references during a season when 99% of what's happening is people who celebrate Christmas are buying Christmas presents.

I'm not certain of the exact origin of the phrase "Happy Holidays", but it's at least as old as 1942, when a song of that name was first sung by that bastion of "pee see" liberalism, Bing Crosby, featured in that liberal elitist Christmas bashing flick,
Holiday Inn.
As far as modern commercial references, retailers couldn't possible try to court as wide a customer base as possible and finds "Happy Holidays" easier to fit on a placard than "Merry Christmas, Happy Haunnakah, Happy Kwaanza, Joyful Solstice...oh, shit, did we cover everyone? Too bad there's no simple phrase that would cover all those hoidays and any others we forgot. Anyway, shop smart...shop S-Mart.", could they? Couldn't have anything to do with that whole "competition in the free market" thing I keep hearing so much about? No? No? Nah, every retailer in the country is just responding to insidious "pee see" pressure.
Of course, apparently, less than 1% of the population is non-Christian in your world, so what do I know?

Confusingly, the anti-Christian elite in this country seems to be composed primarily of Christians...

Yah, the baseless allegations just keep rolling.
