Before I answer this (and I think I can), lemme ask you something:

Do you really want to know? Have you given the matter any thought? What do you think the role of government is? How do you feel we determine whether a given use of government funding is a reasonable one?
I've read and thought about the role of government for years. To understand the ideas on that that I agree with, I refer you to any of the many texts on libertarianism. Even within a democracy, as opposed to a free society - one principle that is sometimes used and ought to be used more often is the idea that those who use a service and can pay for it should pay for it. Example - the highway taxes levied on gasoline. As for why, eg, there is massive funding of "education" in california, that is because of the apparently unbreakable lock the teachers unions have on politics in this state - not anything to with reason.
Okay. But do you really want to hear an answer, or do you just want to berate people who think there might be one? Is effort put into exploring this going to get more pat dismissals and derision, or will you actually engage on the topic?
