Michael Crichton has a way of making the science in his fiction sound totally plausible to a layman like me. If nothing else, reading his stuff has piqued my interest enough to research some of it. So, to me, even if it isn't "fact" it is still a bug in my ear to go learn something new.
Some movies too. I recently watched
Monster and went immediately online after to read about the real woman depicted in the movie....did the same thing with
Braveheart and
Tombstone off the top of my head. Hmm, come to think of it, movies and books have prompted much of my research and learning.
