The phrase "One nation under God" was not part of the original Pledge of Allegiance, written in 1892. The phrase "under God" was added in 1954, after intensive lobbying by the Knights of Columbus and at the suggestion of a Presbyterian minister named George M. Docherty. This was during the McCarthy era, and it is widely believed that the change was intended specifically to distinguish the U.S. from the "Godless Communists" of the Soviet Union.
