The standing waves thing is why consumer microwaves usually have the same internal width: it has to be a whole number of wavelengths, and the wavelength is 4.8 inches. Commercial microwaves often operate at a lower frequency (915 MHz instead of 2.45 GHz) so their wavelength is 12.9 inches.
