Connective tissues bind body parts together, provide support and protection for the body, transport substances within the body, and fill body spaces. Connective tissue is easy to recognize because the cells of connective tissue are separated from each other by non-living material called
matrix. The matrix may be a rigid solid, as it is in
bone, for example. The matrix may have a gel-like consistency, as it does in
loose connective tissue. The matrix can even be a liquid, as it is in
blood.
