Art Firstborns in the Trevi Fountain Area Get Nervous

Some folks, apparently futurists of sorts (which is so cool 'cause I love futurism and have been yearning for a revivial), threw red liquid into the Trevi Fountain, apparently to protest the money spent on the Rome Film Festival. (Red carpet, red water. Get it? GET IT?!)

Il ManifestoLeaflets left around the fountain referred to the RomeFilmFest which opened Thursday in the Italian capital: "You wanted just a red carpet; we want a city entirely in vermilion" before denouncing the event's 15-million-euro (21-million-dollar) budget.

They added: "Today we give birth to a new violent conception of life and history, which exalts the battle against ... the toadies of false power, slaves to the global market."

Check out the Biblical plagueishness of it all:

Okay, I've finally finished translating the manifesto. I've tried as much as possible, with the help of today's chatters, to retain the feel of the original, including non-standard grammar and invented words.

FTM: Futuristaction 2007Futurism was born in Paris in 1909 with the publication of the Manifest of Futurism of FTM [Filippo Tommaso Marinetti] published in the daily "Le Figaro". Our Idea in movement blends all the fields of life, society and culture. For this our nature, we will be the Vanguard, as such we will collide against everything and everyone in the spirit of fight and sane violence, we wil be make of this greybourgeois society a TRIUMP OF COLOR. We will batter you to make the Art, Culture and Work live again. Together with you, the aged and survivors of a marketcentric society, will die art, work, ingenuity as a phenomenon capable of following all the new means of production of contemporary industrial society. Thus begins, for we futurists of the new millennium, a new adhesion to the evolved techniques and the new means of expression interpreting a total renovation brought about by a frenetic impetus towards the future but above all by a preoccupation for the passage of time. Thus is born the exultation for the fight, March, to Not Rot, -- Fight, to Not Die. Glorify the machine, the motor and the speed of the Gigabyte, elevate the speed of thought as creative genius of a new beauty that grows and enriches the world. We futurists reject utterly your foggy and nebulous past, we reject your collections of books, your academies and your museums, tragic representations of the present cultural cemetery and we distance ourself from the political alchemies of this your society of dwarfs.

Today is born with us a new violent conception of Life and History, that exalts the battle at the expense of peace, and despises you asslickers of false power, slaves of the global market. Receive our contempt like a sentencing. We want to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and fearlessness, courage, audaciousness, rebellion, will be essential elements of our behavior. All actions are generated to lend strength to the fight against the wastage of the regime, the precariousness, the usury, the trafficking of beauty, the falseness of the law, the temporariness of workers' lives, the uncertainty of tomorrow and for the liberty of the peoples.

Eja!

FUTURIStACTIon

March to not rot,
fight to not die

"However, the Willamette is much larger than the Chicago River and the dye dumped today colored only a small section of the choppy waters a medium shade of pink."

Yeah, the Willamette river, a nice pink in the middle of the oily gross gray green water. Really more like trying to frost a moldy bagel pretty.

They have a suspect in custody. He denies all, sadly, but he does have high praise for Futurists, in remarkably similar terminology to said Futurists, no less.

BustedThanks to photos taken by security cameras, the man was later identified as Graziano Cecchini, 54, a right-wing extremist. He is expected to face charges of damaging public monuments.

Two or three other people were believed to have been with him when he struck on Friday afternoon, as the usual crowd of tourists milled around the fountain. The others have yet to be identified.

Cecchini held a press conference on Monday outside the central Roman police station where he was scheduled to make a statement.

"It wasn't me. But whoever did it was a genius, a Futurist. He demonstrated that you can protest without violence and without damaging anything," he said.

The marble is cleaning up nicely, btw. No permanent stains.

Mussolini embraced Futurism as an art movement, so it's not out of the realm of the possible that a Futurist could be a "Mussolini Dux" style neo-fascist.

It's all a little vague, though. One of the AP articles I read before posting the OP referred to the perpetrator as an "anarchist", so the speculation has been all over the place.

:giggle: Dux = Duce = leader. You can still see the phrase graffitoed all over the place in Italy by people of the neo-fascist persuasion.
