Default Economist Milton Friedman dead at 94

Story from Yahoo-Associated Press

OK, you should all know who he is; after all, most of the current U.S. monetary policy is based on his theories. He was a steadfast supporter of limited government and laissez-faire capitalism, which (somewhat unfortunately) helped to create the modern Libertarian politics championed by countless Internet trolls. Which of course was not his fault--like so many other economic and political theorists, his ideas were dumbed down and misapplied by people far less talented than himself (e.g., most politicians).

Regardless of whether you agree with his ideas, he was massively influential and certainly will be missed.

"There's no such thing as a free lunch"

I recall reading his book back in AP Economics class in High School.

I think he also hosted an economics education show on PBS called "Trade-offs" or something like that???

I hate to threadjack this, but it's kinda related. I don't pretend to understand economics and I've never even tried to study it, so where would be a good place to get an objective overview of the subject? I asked this basic question a few years ago on another bb and the only reply that I remember was a book called "Economics In One Lesson." I never bothered to follow up on that book or any other, but I've got some free time in the evenings right now so I'd might as well start reading something.

Those old "Trade off" episodes would be a good intro to economics.

A poem written by David Slack:

Supply-sider moves into deficit

So farewell
Then
Milton Friedman

Taken from us by
The invisible
Hand.

Now that you and
Ronnie are
Gone,

Maggie is the
Only one from the old gang
Left

Unless you count
Pinochet.

As you arrive in
The luxury wing of
Heaven

I wonder if
Ron will
Remember you

And if you will have to pay for
Lunch.
