Mallet Petition to save that Aussie girl from the firing squad in Bali

It all seems rather severe, not to mention: tragic if she is innocent... xx
This is something that could so easily happen to any one of us so
unwittingly so please join the petition. Please take a moment to read and
sign the following petition to help save Australian citizen Schapelle Corby
from death by firing squad in Indonesia.

Schapelle Corby has been detained in a Balinese prison and now awaits
sentencing from a panel of judges on whether she
will be committed to the death penalty, by a firing squad, for allegedly
attempting to import four kilograms of cannibis into Indonesia.

This law is out-dated and inhumane, and considering that convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Bashir has only been sentenced to two years and six months jail (with the prospect of appeal) for his proven 'conspiracy' participation in the Bali bombings that killed 183 people, in the same country, it is inconsistent and absurd that another person should face the death penalty for allegedly smuggling cannibis into the country.

Furthermore, the Australian Government and airlines should be taking more
responsibility for this incident in any case,
since it is the fault of the Australian airlines/airport that the drugs even
left Australia in the first place - which also leaves us to ponder on the
security and possible internal corruption of staff working at Australian
airports, in light of
drug smuggling and terrorism. We the undersigned demand that the Australian
Government, and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, act responsibily to
ensure that, innocent or guilty, Schapelle Corby is returned to Australia
and that she does NOT face the 'death penalty by firing Squad' in Indonesia.

Instructions:

minister.downer@dfat.gov.au and then clear the list of names back to
number 1, place your name there and forward to all of your contacts.

No, I do not think she should be shot no matter what the actual facts are. I can understand why some people support the death penalty in some cases, but I am opposed to it.

I asked because while I've heard about this case before (there's another thread about it around here somewhere), I didn't know how close to a resolution it was. I wondered if the petition indicated that a verdict had been reached.

The other thread is here. I've been looking up news reports every few days, and just read an interview with Schappelle the other day. As skeptical as I am generally, I find it extremely hard to believe that did this crime. In any case I am personally opposed to capital punishment, but even when I wasn't I absolutely opposed it for non-violent offenses.

It looks like it'll be another week before we find out her possible sentence. They were supposed to announce it yesterday but she passed out in court. Story here.

What a total cluster f**k.

Gee, you think she has any reason to be hysterical? I'd be crying like a little baby myself if I knew I could die over some pot that wasn't even mine. And gee, reading that article ... those judges really showed some compassion for her, eh?

I hate to say this but ... she's doomed.

If they give her a death sentence, Australia should go in, commando-style and snatch her back.

Oh, and not that I ever had a desire to go to Indonesia but ... forget it, not now, not ever, even if a job is riding on it.

I'd say that there's a good likelihood that she is guilty of trying to get some weed into Bali.

But she should NOT get the death penalty.

The point made about how the guy who bombed the nightclub in Bali causing the violent and pre-meditated deaths of many people only got a couple of years, but this girl should be executed is sickening.

Hmm, although now I'm not sure. Not that I ever was sure, mind you. Just that it is not unfeasible that she is guilty of the crime she is charged with.

It's a vile injustice, but I just have to point out that chain email never works, no matter how good the cause. These kinds of petitions are worthless because they're full of repeats and fake names, some of them idiotic.

If you want to be effectively heard, I would suggest you try contacting your local member of parliament if you're in Australia, and/or the office of the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Oz, and/or your local Indonesian embassy or consulate directly via phone, email or best of all, snail mail.

I agree with you, liv.

But what I think is good about these petitions is that they get the word out and create awareness.

I really doubt that she is guilty, Luna. It just doesn't make sense. 4 kilos is a bit much to carry with you for personal use while on a vacation, and I have a hard time believing she was actually smuggling it in with intent to distribute. Who would she know there to sell it to?

You think there's a good chance she's guilty of trying to take 4+ kilos of pot into Bali in a transparent bag tossed on top of her boogie board? If she did that she should be in a mental hospital, not facing a firing squad. I have a really hard time believing she did it.

But again, even if she did there's no way in hell (imo) she deserves anything more than a year or two in prison (if that, given that it was her first criminal offense ever.)

Oops, x-post with John Carter. Yeah that! :D

I used to think that too, luna, but this site changed my mind about it.

Having said that, I don't wanna derail the thread any longer. If anyone wants to, we can talk about the general issue of online petitions in this thread I started about BreakTheChain.org a while back. :)

Oh and btw, someone in Australia sent a letter (along with a few bullets) to the Indonesian embassy there, threatening to kill them all if Schappelle gets the firing squad. :(

She's a surfer and a Gold Coast beach babe.

Aussie surfers and beach babes are a dime a dozen in Bali. It's a cheap and popular destination for Aussie surfers.

Aussie surfers are known for smoking a lot of weed in Bali.

I've seen people do things that stupid.

I've been someone that stupid. Lucky for me I didn't get caught.

It's always good to find out what ARE effective ways of petitioning or protesting. :yup:

Jeez what a fuck up this case is .. I sincerely hope that, if convicted, the Aussie government will do something to try and prevent this happening. Surely they could demand that she is returned to Oz to serve a jail sentence there? (and then hopefully quietly released after a short period of time).

Even if she is guilty, and she might not be, it's fucking incredible that she might die for it.

The people who actually planned and carried out the Bali bombing did in fact get the death penalty. The mullah who inspired it was, AFAIK, only convicted of heading a terrorist organisation.

Ain't gonna happen. Australia has neither the will, nor the capability for doing this.

Aren't Australian citizens outraged by this? Why do they not have the will to get her out?
