Newspaper On Schapelle Corby

We've had a couple other threads about this but I didn't feel like dredging them up. The facts of the case can be found at the Schapelle Corby entry at Wikipedia.

Schapelle's 20 yr. sentence, which had been reduced to 15 on appeal, was recently reinstated by the Indonesian supreme court - coinciding with her half-brother's arrest in a violent drug-related home invasion. Now investigators have exposed a link between her dad and a major marijuana manufacturer.

I'm starting to think she might be guilty.

So? It's not whether you're guilty or innocent in Indonesia. It's who you bribe (see the most recent case of the Australian model who got picked up on ecstacy charges). Also, the greatest fault with the whole bullshit was that the evidence was never handled correctly at anytime during the proceedures. No fingerprints or DNA evidence was originally taken that could have provided solid evidence for or against either way. The Australian government refused to aid them in getting Australian baggage handlers to give evidence and generally, this whole thing was a fucking circus.

I agree, if she was smuggling to deal (as such an amount would suggest) she should serve time, but only after a proper trial at the hands of a decent system. Not a bunch of faux-pious corrupt-as-fuck Indonesian courtmonkeys.

I wouldn't presume to judge the case from here, I was just remarking on the fact that there was an overwhelming presumption of complete innocence from a lot of people (when she was first arrested) on the basis of her being little miss wholesome beauty school student. The fact that her half-brother and dad appear to have ties to gangs and major drug manufacturers hints at a slightly different story.

Interesting.
I think part of the assumption of innocence is that the Indonesian court system is so messed up in the eyes of the western world. She was found guilty and had to prove her innocence with the deck stacked against her. She may be guilty but I think it's almost a guarantee there are innocent people in jail because of their law system.

Yeah, that's true. And there's an interesting family situation, though it's hard to get the real story on it between all the fucking checkbook journalism occuring in Australia at present. Bloody media...
