Britons tire of cruel, vulgar US: poll

LONDON (AFP) - People in Britain view the United States as a vulgar, crime-ridden society obsessed with money and led by an incompetent president whose Iraq policy is failing, according to a newspaper poll.

The United States is no longer a symbol of hope to Britain and the British no longer have confidence in their transatlantic cousins to lead global affairs, according to the poll published in The Daily Telegraph.

The YouGov poll found that 77 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement that the US is "a beacon of hope for the world".

It sounds like most Brits think of us as about...what percentage now? I guess it depends upon who one converses with. Americans, as a mass, are a fairly gullible people, who are easily drawn in by charismatic leadership. Remember, Bushit's elections were both fairly close. I'd say a good half of the urban population has been disillusioned for six years now. I personally feel, as an American who loves his country, that it has been highjacked by some of the most venal and self-serving corrupt politicians that this country has ever seen in high office. I'll readily admit that I'm a wingnut (48% still in dissent) when it comes to George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the current administration of my national government. I wish it to change...soon, and as definitively as possible. I'd personally like to see George W. Bush be impeached and removed from office, along with his vice-president, Richard Cheney, for high crimes and misdemeanors in office.

That will never happen with the current House of Representatives...nor the current attitude of the Senate. It will take a massive replacement of House members to truly change the direction of American government. I'm not all that sure that it will happen. I still think the most effective impact I can have on the administration of governance is to follow events, participate, and volunteer in the citizen watchdog type organizations. Liberty requires eternal vigilence...remember?

From that article the Poll sounds like it was designed to make catching headlines. I mean how many people view any country as "a beacon of hope for the world"? That just seems worded to make for a great headline no matter which way the poll goes.

Same with other questions. I also wonder if they asked them how they define "america" are we talking about how the government acts, how tourists act, how the people act, etc.

This just in, 85% of americans think the brits should visit the dentist.
