Default Scots Want Kilts Killed

A flood of "cheap and shoddy" imported tartans from India are chafing the Scottish, "putting the livelihoods of some 200 traditional Scottish kilt-makers and weavers at serious risk." And... they're made of cheap acrylics instead of the traditional wool. *gasp* It's no fair, there isn't a level playing field. Scotch whisky has unacceptably high tariffs on imports to India. Of course we all know Indians want more whisky.

I can see how it would be a problem if people are actually trying to pass off tartans made in India as being of Scottish origin -- that's a "truth in advertising" thing and should be corrected. But if someone is willing to buy and wear a cheap and shoddy tartan from India -- knowing that it's from India -- well, they're free to be tacky gits, aren't they?

Hey! I have a kilt, and mine was not made in Scotland...

It was made in New Zealand. Is it then not bonified?

A side-question on this - I read somewhere that scottish kilts date back to, and came from, the kilts worn by roman soldiers during the occupation of britain. Any truth to that? (I know they didn't occupy what is now scotland.)

from the linked articleIt said a cut-price imported acrylic kilt sold at £39, whereas a traditionally woven one made from 8yds of quality cloth should cost between £150 and £200.

Acrylic?

That's an abomination in the eyes of the laird!

It must be WOOL.

That's what I meant about the cheap and shoddy. I'm sure your NZ kilt is made with 100% New Zealand wool.

Acrylic... ugh. :egad:
