Why Capitalism Rules
I read a book this past weekend.
Let that sink in.
Ok, anyway, I read a book this past weekend called "The Jakarta Method", by Vincent Bevins. Subtitle: "Washington's Anticommunist Crusade & the Mass Murder Program that Shaped Our World."
Holy shitballs, I really did not know the extent to which we fucked with the freedom, happiness and very survival of millions of people all over the world just to ensure that our economy would thrive.
Despite everything I previously knew about the shady shit the US government has been involved in over the years and the obvious failures of the free market approach, I still deep down believed that we were the richest and most powerful country and that non-European socialist/communist countries failed to succeed entirely based on the qualities of the systems.
No, we invented hysterical anti-communism then sold it around the globe so that authoritarians could use it as an excuse to exterminate leftists (usually with our government's knowledge, sometimes with its help) and adopt an economic model beneficial only to the ruling classes of our respective countries (but of course still overwhelmingly *more* beneficial to ours).
Ugh. Anyway, it's a fascinating read and I highly recommend it.
