Never having suffered from insomnia I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that the best treatment for insomnia is a good night's sleep. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?
|
This is good advice! Also have you tried shutting off the lights, turning off the radio, and not having your espresso nightcap?

I have a headache the size of Oklahoma!
I have to go to court tomorrow to testify in the case I withdrew from. At least I won't be missing any work, since those big business yahoos who need their documents reviewed still don't have their shit together.
Feh.

Re: What's up with you?
I literally can't remember the last time I got a good night's sleep.
For what it's worth: In my experience, most insomniacs do not find the "you just need a good night's sleep" joke at all helpful or funny, given that it's a serious (and sometimes life-threatening) condition -- and that the entire problem is that you can't get a good night's sleep.
"You know what you need? A good night's sleep!"
"No ... you think?"

Well, since I wasn't actually trying to be helpful, that's all right then.

My apologies: I did not wish to seem rude.
It's just that when you're on your second or third day without sleep, when you hear someone say something like "You just need a good night's sleep", you start thinking things like: "This must be what it's like to be drowning, and for someone to say, 'Have you tried swimming? That should solve your problem'."
Aaaaand, it's 3:00 a.m. Maybe I'll just go for a walk ...
I mean, it's not like I have to go to work in a few hours' time or anything. Oh, wait. Yes I do.

Re: What's up with you?
Yesterday I donated platelets for the last time this year. I've been asking for months, "Will I be able to donate again after I've traveled to Peru?" Every time the answer has been, "I don't know. But I'll try to find out for you." And that's the last I heard until the next time I was there to ask again, when the dance would start again.
But I finally got my answer. Apparently the Red Cross has one person who has the "risky countries" memorized and she was on duty yesterday. When I asked about Peru she said, "That depends. What part of Peru are you going to?" I told her it was Lima and Cusco. [Aside: there are other places in Peru worth seeing?]
"Oh, then you won't be able to donate again for a year. Malaria risk."
"In Lima?" I asked, nonplussed.
"Yes. Just because it's an urban area doesn't mean you won't bring the disease back."
Wow. Okay, then.
And now ... I want you all to lie to me and tell me you'll miss me. When I leave on Thursday. And when I don't come back for 9 days.

I don't know that guy. (For that matter, who are you?) But I have "incommunicado"--just the word--in my head every since I learned my phone + Sprint doesn't support international calling. So I will be ... in-co-mune-o-ka-dough!

Lima is down by the sea, muggy, hot, mosquitoey. They've also never heard of window screens. Source: my brother Jim, whose ex-wife was assigned to the German Embassy in Lima for four years.

Also, I am super jelly. Not just because you're going to Peru, but because you'll have an excuse not to donate platelets for a year. You try to do a good thing once and they nag you every freaking week...

Since I've been playing Ingress I've noticed the players who seem to suffer from insomnia have turned that into a win for their team. "Some people suffer from insomnia, some seem to enjoy it."

Have a great time, Sharon! Oh sure I'll miss you, but more than that, I'm totally jelly at all the wonderful history you'll get to enjoy.
You have to promise to visit the pre-Inca Huaca Pucllana complex in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima. The clay brick structure of the temple is freaking incredible and the museum is a true innovator. All archaeological investigations of the complex are funded by visits to the site's museum and top-rated restaurant. You have to go and eat there and check out the vision impaired room of the museum where people can handle replica artifacts and then tell me all about it when you get back.

Re: What's up with you?
Well, if this isn't an embarrassment of riches, I don't know what is.
Yesterday, a very helpful person called with updated information about my timeshare agreement. Apparently, the changes to my contract are like TWO HUNDRED PAGES. Far too big to just mail to me, and far too complicated for me to understand. But they offered to buy us dinner for two at Macaroni Grill and explain it to me there!
Then, this morning, I got a call from someone looking for TLM to tell him about a government grant he's won, and he's only going to have to pay a small fee to retrieve it! This could be just the break he needs!
Finally, just now, a very helpful man named Steve called to offer to help me fix my Windows computer. I talked to him for about ten minutes and got him to explain the situation to me. Apparently, in 'my state,' there are almost a MILLION Windows computers! I told him I thought that was a pretty big number, and that I could tell he's smart for being able to count that high. But then, he told me to look up their website at esupport-hyphen-live.com, and when I told him that I don't have a hyphen anymore because I used to ride horses,* he told me to have a nice day! We lost our connection after that, though. I hope he calls back soon.
It's not even noon yet, guys. I cannot believe our good fortune!
* Fine. I just asked him if that was one of those things. I didn't think of the horses part until like thirty seconds later.
