This nearly went in the Trump thread, but Trump is actually just one of the supporting players here so I think it calls for a new thread. Here's the splendid Heather Cox Richardson:
It's been remarkable to watch Republicans, even "moderates," realize they don't have to pretend they support voting rights anymore in the post-Shelby era. As recently as 2006, the Voting Rights Act renewal passed the Senate 98-0 and was signed by George W. Bush. https://t.co/TKMQMsZq82
I can't bear to watch this kind of dreck, so when I saw news of this yesterday, I just assumed it was bad and moved on. But for some reason I did click on it this morning. You really should do so. It's far worse-- more extreme, more loathsome, more dangerous-- than I imagined. https://t.co/8o2w3mzOd0
Mark Zuckerberg, in my opinion, a criminal, is allowed to spend over $400 million and therefore able to change the course of a Presidential Election, and nothing happens to Facebook.
Comey lied.
Schiff lied.
Crooked Hillary lied.
McCabe lied.
The two lovers, Peter and Lisa, lied.
They all lied about everything having to do with Russia, Russia, Russia, because they knew it was a SCAM, and they all lied about everything having to do with Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine because they knew it was a SCAM.
They made up fairy tales about me knowing how badly it would hurt the U.S.A.—and nothing happens to them. Is there no justice in our Country?
The Left NEVER stops coming after me, Friend. I’m fighting back (and I’ll WIN), but I’m calling on YOU to stand with me.
"I believe in President Biden," @Sen_JoeManchin says. "We just have to work together. We can't go too far left. This is not a center-left or a left country. We are a center, if anything, center-right country."

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
Northern Conservative†Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
Thread about the rittenhouse bit and it really cuts into the whole threatened white supremacy thing:
One thing that the Rittenhouse trial throws into stark relief is a strongly held belief among a huge percentage of white conservatives that people protesting for Black lives should be killed, and that white conservatives should be allowed to personally do it.
Ann Coulter needs no introduction here. I haven't read it all, because I haven't the stomach. Suffice to say, she's doing that conservative thing of nudging her audience's Overton window in the direction of outrageous by accusing the opposition of the outrages she wants to legitimise:

[Miles Taylor] told DeVega that Republican congresspeople are worried they will be attacked if they cross Trump. “I'm talking about former Cabinet secretaries, sitting members of Congress and others who personally confessed to me, ‘I don't think I can join you in rising up against this guy because I've got to worry about my family's safety.’” Taylor said. “I didn't anticipate how much I was going to hear that as a response. They would say to me, “Look, I’ve got kids and this is too crazy right now.”
But if Trump is permitted to hand over control over the machinery of our elections to his loyalists, today’s “crazy” is going to look quaint.
[my emphasis]
Here’s the thing (and this is related to the centrism that I began to talk about in another thread); democracy is not just a means to an end. It is a paramount end in itself. Republicans may fear that they cannot win a fair election, but they still have a self-interest and a moral duty to oppose efforts to attack and weaken the democratic institutions standing in the way of their party wielding political power.
And one such attack is the Trump/Putin firehose of lies. There is no democratic defence against the tyrant if there isn’t an overwhelming majority which refuses to vote for candidates, irrespective of political position, who show such a disregard for truth.
Blue lies are killing us.

The Proud Boys and Oathkeepers you saw on TV last night are now running for school boards and city councils and election administrator roles in cities and counties all across America.
As a follow up to that, seems an appropriate thread for
BREAKING: Authorities have stopped this Uhaul and detained approximately 20 people. They all have the same type of clothing on. Truck was stopped about 1/8th mile from the pride event. We’re working to get more info from police. @KREM2pic.twitter.com/bez1msBz45
UPDATE: Police say 31 people arrested, charged with conspiracy to riot. Chief Lee White says the group appears to be Patriot Front based on patches, clothing and documents found during the search of the uhaul. Police found shields, shin guards and 1 smoke grenade.
Looks like the police department that arrested those 31 Patriot Front psychos over the weekend is getting death threats. Here's hoping this prompts a cop or two to consider that violent right wingers may not be the best choice for spiritual kinfolk.

Me: All pigs are bad
My Sister: Even those cops that arrested all those white supremacists?
Me: Sheeit, they were just lucky they had to work that day or they would've been arrested too.
It is very good, but it is also a year old and quite a lot has changed that make some of the predictions less compelling. The overturning of Roe v Wade, the arrest and prosecution of many January 6th insurrectionists, the January 6th hearings, the stolen documents scandal, the rise of DeSantis as a viable contender to challenge Trump, etc.
All these things combined make it less likely (though I wouldn't say unlikely) that the Republicans will recapture the Congress, and that Trump will run (much less win) again. That being said, I think the GOP has internalized Trumpism deeply enough that another authoritarian like DeSantis might inherit Trump's supporters, and in any case I think all of this only postpones the civil war.
Nominating DeSantis would simply continue the Republican support, if not active encouragement, of installing obviously crazy people into the highest offices. To think we were once worried about Sarah Palin being just a heartbeat away from the Presidency. The clown show now gets top billing.
