Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
The remains of actor Julian Sands were found. I remember him from Boxing Helena at least; he was in many other things. I found it odd that he has been missing since January but I didn't hear about it until they found his body a few days ago.
Remains found on Mt. Baldy identified as actor Julian Sands

I heard about it when he went missing, I think there was even some searching but he had been gone long enough and there were some extreme temps that meant he either had the equipment to deal with the weather or was already dead.

Arkin was a great actor, and, while Little Miss Sunshine" was a fine flick, I think that he defined the role, more than the film defined him.
"The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" was, IMHO, one of his best works.
We will be having an "Alan Arkin" night this weekend.

If you haven't seen it, catch him in the 1st & 2nd seasons of The Kominsky Method on the netflixes. He was brilliantly funny.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
May I also recommend "The Kominsky Method" to you all. One of the things that struck me early on in the series was how the storyline had Arkin's character as co-protagonist with Douglas's. Yes, Douglas is introduced first, and has the title role, but as the series unfolds we spend as much time with Norman Newlander and his hinterland as with Sandy Kominsky and his.
And sans Arkin, Series 3 is pretty much a dud in my opinion. At the time I felt it was a huge mistake to write Newlander out, but I've since discovered that it was Arkin who declined to participate.
One of the best.

Yeah I actually stopped watching in series 3 because it just didn't resonate with me anymore. I will probably go back and finish it eventually though.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Milan Kundera, Czech author, dead at 94
I read a lot of his work when I was in college - right around the time the movie version of The Unbearable Lightness of Being came out.

I didn't realize Kundera was still alive, but I loved the few of his books I read in my 20s.

A good run indeed!
ETA: I confess coming about this --><-- close to praising Bennett for his work as Vic Fontaine on the final season of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 before remembering that was James Darren.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
How can you be sad about losing a 97* year old who was in his seventh year of diagnosed Alzheimers?
Dunno, but I'm close to tears.
God bless you, Tony!

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
The world was a better place with Bennett in it. Never mind the musicianship; he was truly one of the good guys. WWII vet, part of the crew that liberated Dachau, an experience that “turned me into a lifelong pacifist and it’s my hope that all wars and violence will become a thing of the past.”
Lost his corporal stripe for committing the unpardonable sin of breaking bread with a fellow U.S. soldier who was black, a friend he went to high school with in New York. He later noted that “It was actually more acceptable to fraternize with the German troops than it was to be friendly with a fellow Black American soldier.”
He marched in Selma, AL with Harry Belafonte, who Bennett credited for giving him an understanding of institutional racism and its effects on the lives of black people.
He pissed some people off for telling some uncomfortable truths about 9/11 and opposing the utterly idiotic invasion of Iraq.
A lot of people who get old, successful and famous become wingnutty. Not Tony Bennett.
