Ted Koppel devoted Nightline to "intelligent design" last night. The intro piece was pretty good, featuring a couple of DI bozos, Stephen Meyer and Jonathan Wells, a couple of fundies jabbering about the Bible, and interview clips with Krauss and Barbara Forrest (and another UW-Madison professor whose name escapes me at the moment).

Part of the commentary addressed the fact that the DI is emboldened by the endorsement of that renowned population geneticist, George W. Bush. I guess you have to take endorsements where you can get 'em.

Unfortunately things went a bit downhill from there, since the featured interviewees were George Will and Cal Thomas. At least Will is opposed to ID, for a couple of the right reasons, but Cal Thomas is just a grade-A moron. Koppel asked Thomas, 'What do you have to say to the fact that we contacted the heads of the biology departments at ten of the country's most prestigious universities, and they unanimously dismissed intelligent design.'

Thomas, needless to say, started blabbering about 'What do you expect, they are secular fundamentalists' and so on. I just want to slap him, that is, if I could stop staring at his hair plugs.

I tried to download the video clip at Nightline's webpage, but my computer went into realplayer/endless loop/popup hell mode.

It's just as well. Had you gotten any further you would've been prompted to pay.

Might have been an interesting watch. I often try to stay away from things like that, the media often sucks at getting details right and I really don't want to go crazy yelling at my TV.

A great article from The New Republic outlining the legal cases to date, among other aspects of the 'controversy.'
