Re: Good King Trump
There are very, very few Americans who actually stand to benefit from his policies. There are quite a few who for some reason still think they will, but they won't. Like those fucking coal miners and everyone else waiting for their game show host from TV to come give them their prizes by propping up their worthless, destructive lifestyles. They didn't get the way they are by letting facts and experience guide them.
Trump voters by and large are in way over their heads. They think everything they don't understand is some kind of fucking hoax, and that Trump is honest because he's ignorant like them. That's why you got all these middle aged and old people saying that was the first time they voted. It's a special type of stupid they have, where they just have a super-low barrier to confidence and think their 'common sense' is some kind of absolute truth, so they don't have to bother actually learning anything new. Some of the younger Trump voters might end up OK eventually. It's pretty common for young people to go through an edgy stage and get over it eventually as they mature and get some real world experience. The older ones, though, it seems unlikely. If they still think that way past about 40 or so, their stupidity is obviously self imposed and self perpetuating and they will never learn a damned thing. (And it's not just ignorance. At that point, it's clearly stupidity, just the kind people choose.)
I dunno exactly what to do about them, but I know it's not 'try to understand their concerns.' Their concerns are all fucking stupid.

Re: Good King Trump
The Conservative machine and Trump have tapped into America's tribalism quite nicely. There are plenty of people who actually feel like they themselves are winning when the republicans win and when Trump gets one over on others and feel good about that winning, even if it ultimately hurts them. The rush of the team win is too great especially since it's the only rush they are getting these days. Which is why dying industries have latched onto Trump. It seems some are just going to ride the winning and the oxy spiral down into ruin thinking all the while that they are doing everything right and winning so much, why is it getting worse? That is afterall Trumps one talent, to be able to whip people's emotions into a frenzy, to get them excited about what they will do together, even if no one knows what that is. They are now Team Trump. I am reminded of a John Oliver piece on Stadiums that had a woman passionately attacking a man for not spending education dollars on a stadium because the Scorpioties or whatever were the soul of the city. Once you tap into this tribal fandom you will get people begging to get reamed in the ass at the profit of the team. I absolutely bet there are some coal miners that will happily dwindle into nothingness instead of rocking the boat for his team too much.
Just like people have internalized Trump as part of their character, there are quite a few people who have internalized dumb as part of their character. That being ignorant is something to be proud about and celebrate the concept of being stupid but good in the heart. But since most of these people aren't actually mentally handicapped they do indeed learn just indirectly so they know of nothing that they haven't directly experienced so you end up with the slowest of children in middle age that can't grasp the concept that their highschool class on a subject maybe wasn't the whole of that subject.

Re: Good King Trump
The bible also says you should feed your hungry enemies, and it does so literally two lines before the ones she quotes. I'm starting to think whoever invented the bible verse quoting system was an evil genius! Some ways you have to give them credit for just blatantly putting it out there that they don't think any of their supporters have actually read or remember the bible, just like they haven't.
I can't wait for in a few years the Trump administration,
'"We're just going to have to put him down harry! -Hagrid" Which is why we are gathered here today to open the Hagrid child torture and animal experimentation ward. hagrid would be proud!

Notwithstanding the wiggle room in that there critique, I doubt anyone detained is being Auschwitz level starved (yet), and despite the entire notion of America tossing the Iran deal aside while instituting America's Ayatrumplah, there are better verses out there.

Re: Good King Trump
President Trump's recent deal with Dear Leader Kim Jong Un reminds me of Neville Chamberlain's Munich appeasement deal with Adolf Hitler.
There are some differences, it must be conceded. It is easier to reverse not having war games than it was for Czechoslovakia to get back the Sudetenland areas.
But there are some strong similarities, like making concessions and getting only vague promises in return.

I think the main reason they think Trump is honest is because he's racist (and sexist).
They think that everyone "knows" the truth which is [insert their racist beliefs] "but they're just too afraid to say it." Trump is one of the few who will say it, which is why he's more honest to them, in a way, even though they clearly have to recognize his frequent lying on any number of other subjects.
This is why Trump's bigotry might've helped him, or at least didn't lose him that many votes vs. a Rubio or Cruz, or even gained him votes overall nationally. It changed his geographical pattern of support for sure, and perhaps is responsible for the fact that he could win while losing the popular vote.

I won't be happy until Trump and Pence are perp-walked out of the White House in chains, like the criminals that they are -- and sent straight to prison, where they belong.
I doubt there's much chance of that happening, sadly, but I can dream ...

It's really hard to outconnive the Republicans. I'm psychologically prepared that there won't be any frog marching or a blue wave or even a blue ripple. If any of it comes to pass it'll all be cake.

I'm reminded of growing up in North Carolina, when Jesse Helms was in office. Helms was a world-class racist, and everyone knew it. Heck, he barely made any attempt to even pretend that he wasn't. His campaign ads were often blatantly racist.
I remember one campaign in particular, during which he took out full-page ads in many of the state's leading newspapers. In these ads, he talked about how "consistent" he had been, and insisted that he had never changed his position on any issue during his entire time in politics.
Since anyone who knew his history was well aware that he'd first made a name for himself in politics as a particularly vicious opponent of Civil Rights legislation, it was pretty clear what the true message of the ad was.
The thing is, given how Helms' name was virtually synonymous with racism, it was hard to find someone who would actually admit to voting for Helms. Yet he won election after election. So it's difficult to come to any conclusion other than that Helms' racism was why a lot of people voted for him -- even though they might be reluctant to admit it.
I'd like to think we're beyond all that. But, Trump ran an openly -- heck, a blatantly -- racist, xenophobic, anti-intellectual, and misogynistic campaign. So anyone who paid any attention at all during the campaign and yet voted for Trump must own up to the fact that they knowingly voted for someone who was running on a platform of racism, xenophobia, anti-intellectualism, and misogyny.
As such, it's hard to come to any conclusion other than that -- whether they'll admit it or not -- these were positive attributes in the minds of an awful lot of Trump voters.
***
The difference, of course, is that there are plenty of people who proudly admit to voting for Trump. But as was the case with Helms, these people will twist themselves into knots while trying to pretend that racism had nothing to do with it.
