Predictably, I've been seeing posts on Facebook saying, "If you're a woman and you own property independent of your husband, you should thank Ruth Bader Ginsburg."

Well, no, that's not the predictable part. The predictable part is the immediate response from Right-wingers saying, "Hey, some [rich] women managed to own property on their own before RBG, thus there is not and never was any such thing as gender-based discrimination and RBG didn't do jack for women."

Uuuuuuuugh!

Right? Remember the fierce outcry over Moscow Myrtle McTurtle not voting on Obama's nominee? Yeah, neither do I.

No sighs of relief, please. This is our opportunity to say "$100 million is jack shit" and get the gravy train rolling in earnest.

$100 MILLION IS JACK SHIT

If you don't believe us, ask Tom Steyer.

If you are disgusted that $100 million may be an insignificant amount in campaign finance terms that is because of GOP appointees to the Supreme Court and it is a good time to shut the fuck up and give more money to Democrats.

I don't know where to put this post so it goes here.

Trump's likely nominee for the SCOTUS, Amy Coney Barrett, is part of a "covenant community" called "People of Praise" from South Bend, IN. According to their wiki page they have expanded into a large network of communities around the country. Interestingly, two of the founders of the "Word of God" in Ann Arbor, MI helped get PoP off the ground. The WoG also expanded around the globe.

Anyway, for anyone just meeting me my family has been involved of the WoG since 1975. Not me, and in fact not many of my relatives anymore, but some of them are still involved. All of this is just to say that I know of where I speak: Margaret Atwood said she got the idea of "handmaids" from the WoG, because yes that was a thing. These people, hundreds of thousands, including some of my family, are fundamentalists who will (and do) vote on one single issue: Abortion.

At the moment the polls look like the Democrats are benefitting more from this crisis than the Republicans, but I promise there are many thousands of Christians, if not hundreds of thousands, who will go out and vote for Trump even if they can't admit it, just to maintain control of the Supreme Court.

If you didn't know, now you know.

But don't give your money to Amy McGrath, however satisfying it is to imagine her beating McConnell.

The problem with that is 1. she's far behind but more importantly 2. she already has over $50 million, so if she loses it's not for a lack of money. Giving to other Democrats would be more effective.

My assumption is that the marginal value of getting from $7 million to $8 million is higher than going from $50m to $51m. SO, using 538's Senate model and "voter power index" along with some fundraising information, I'd say the best races to give to are (in order-ish):
  • MT: Steve Bullock
This is a tight race, in a small, cheap advertising state. This is the one you should donate to if you only do one race.
  • AK: Al Gross
This race isn't as tight and there's not a ton of polling (+AK is hard to poll) so it might be a mirage, but it's an even smaller state.
  • KS: Barbara Bollier
Kansas is a bit bigger, and Bollier has a pretty good fundraising advantage over the Republican, but the dollar amounts are still lower than elsewhere.
  • IA: Theresa Greenfield
This one is similar to KS, but the race has more money in it already.
  • ME: Sara Gideon
You know this one. Maine is small, but after this weekend, Gideon has something like $30m, and a significant advantage over Collins on that count. If not, she'd rank #2.
So that's the first tier. I gave to those five plus Jaime Harrison through the ActBlue links at Princeton Election Consortium — Innovations in democracy since 2004 But afterwards, I thought that Harrison already has a ton of money, so he probably isn't the best person to give to, so I decided to look at it in more detail.

Then we have some less competitive races in smallish states, or competitive races in largish states:
  • MS: Mike Espy
This one has been under the radar since most people probably weren't thinking it was competitive. It probably won't go our way, but it's closer than you might assume, and Espy only lost by 7 pts in 2018. And since Espy has raised less than $2m, and MS is a small state, more money for him would go further than in some other races, even if it's not as likely a win.
  • GA: Jon Ossoff
Georgia has a chance of going blue, but unlike Biden, Ossoff needs 50%+1 to win it. He also has less money than others (a lot less than he did in his House special... harder to raise money when you're not the only game in town). He'd be higher if Georgia were smaller.
  • SC: Jaime Harrison
This appears to be a real race, although I don't trust SC, so Graham is still favored. But Harrison already has over $30m (although Graham has about as much) so more money might make less of a difference. Seeing Graham go down isn't as good as McConnell, but it would also be one of the more satisfying victories (which is probably why Harrison has so much money. I'm noticing a pattern with Cruz, McConnell and Graham's opponents getting tons of money...)
  • CO: John Hickenlooper
Cory Gardner looks done, but he still has a shot. CO is medium size, and Hickenlooper isn't underfunded though.
  • NC: Cal Cunningham
I believe Cunningham has healthy fundraising, and more money than Tillis, but this is a very competitive race and is the most likely to decide senate control.
  • MI: Gary Peters
Unfortunately, this race is more competitive than we'd like for an incumbent. But Peters has a good bit of money and he's still pretty favored.
  • GA-special: Raphael Warnock
It would be tempting to back Warnock over Lieberman just as a fuck you to Lieberman's father, Holy Joe, but he also is the one who's more likely to make it to the runoff. And with less money than most on here, a bigger boost. You'll likely have more time to give, as this race will almost certainly go to a runoff.
Finally, there are some races where the candidate has tons of money/big money advantage or it's not very close but it's in a smaller state. These are still somewhat competitive - almost all more competitive than Kentucky, and aside from AZ, less well-funded.
  • AZ: Mark Kelly
Martha McSally looks done, and Kelly has more money than every Senate candidate except maybe McGrath. But it's still only a medium-size state and AZ Dems have some other races of interest, and despite her "skip meals for McSally" desperation, she has raised more money than most candidates as well, so perhaps it's not a waste.
  • AL: Doug Jones
Alabama's not a big state, but Jones has a 3:1 fundraising advantage over Tuberville and he's still down big in the most recent poll. He's not dead yet but there are better prospects. But if you're giving to many candidates... incumbency isn't worthless yet.
  • NM: Ben Ray Lujan
This is an open seat, so it may be wise to take it less for granted. NM is also a small state and Lujan isn't >$10m like many on this list.
  • MN: Tina Smith
Incumbent with a significant fundraising advantage, but MN isn't in the bag.
  • TX: M.J. Hegar
Texas is a very expensive state to run in because it's so big, and Hegar isn't super close, but it's a possibility, particularly if Biden's coattails can improve her standing. But the fundamental problem of investing much in this race is that your dollar doesn't go far in Texas relative to smaller states. One point in her favor is that TX has a lot going on downballot, including the possibility that the GOP's gerrymander (which was based on the suburbs being reliably GOP) may backfire delivering the Democrats control of the TX House potentially even if Trump wins the state.
  • LA: Adrian Perkins
There's no information about his funds since due to Louisiana not holding normal primaries, it's possible to enter the race in June. This is again a longshot, but Biden is strangely running stronger than expected in Louisiana (he's had polls where he's only behind by single digits).
  • NH: Jeanne Shaheen
Same as Smith... except Shaheen has better polls and more money. But NH is also a very small state, otherwise she wouldn't be on the list.
If you've maxed out to all of the above, well... then give to your local Dems, House candidates and/or Biden... THEN maybe give to McGrath.

How clear does the GOP have to make it, guys? Obama was a black guy.

The nightmare the US is currently enduring is literally a manifestation of GOP ongoing trauma over that. They will never recover, and are working hard to inflict equivalent trauma on everyone else.

There will be one in San Jose at City Hall if any of yall happen to be about, but there are marches all over the US.

I will be there to express my dissent towards the installation of Serena Joy on the Supreme Court.

The SJ demo by our house was cancelled due to covid, slash pivoted to a "virtual march" text campaign thingie. But we already had our outfits, so we schlepped our asses 50 minutes up to the city, aka SF, and ended up actually having a really nice morning with our friend and the other demonstrators. I ate a couple Jazz gummies and just blinked at anybody who tried to engage with me through my hood and mask. It was bliss. Shields up! Red Alert

I found these on other people's twitters by searching #womensmarchsf

The three of us are in both pics, if you know where to look :examine:

There will be one in San Jose at City Hall if any of yall happen to be about, but there are marches all over the US.

Should this be happening when there is a cold virus that will kill you, there is a pandemic, don't you know.

Btw, the WHO changed the definition (about a decade ago) of a pandemic from:
world-wide with a shit ton of deaths, to world-wide.

The common cold, by definition, is a pandemic.

Science, it doesn't matter if you believe it or not.

No kidding, I'm glad to see you back.

We, together, are most probably wrong in the margins, most of the time. If we don't keep score it will work out.

Thanks for the Hey, it is truly nice seeing you as well.

You have made me smile this day, a lovely person you are.
