Re: Bits and PCs - a Computers and Tech Miscellany
My gut feel is that one of AVG, Avast and Avira may be the least bad. Which one is "best" varies over time.

Oh that's right, I use Linux.

Re: Bits and PCs - a Computers and Tech Miscellany
Got (some ) of my Cybikos down from the loft.
I'm wondering about the unopened, still in original packaging ones, which I don't need right now, as the opened ones are working okay.
Should I ...
- Keep them in original packaging as possible future museum pieces?
- Or open them up to remove the batteries, and possibly save them from the dreaded leaky battery corrosion - keeping in mind that the batteries may already have leaked and ruined them?
- Sell them on Ebay?

Link them all together and see if they achieve sentience.

Re: Bits and PCs - a Computers and Tech Miscellany
I asked on Reddit about the packaging and batteries.
Someone suggested I should open the Classic ones, remove the batteries and, if they work okay, put them back in the boxes and sell them. This can be done without damaging the packaging.
The Extreme ones come in a blister pack: he said no point selling them 'unopened' because if the new owner does intend to open them, and the batteries have ruined them, then they can claim a refund. This means you actually lose money, because you still have to pay the shipping and eBay charges. You can sell them "parts only, untested and may be damaged" but then you get practically nothing. He suggested I open them because working old tech is better than old tech just to look at.
For both types, if battery leakage has damaged them beyond repair, then throw them away.

I feel that this is good advice in general.

I see through your plan. First you encourage me to throw away my Cybikos, and then you sneak around my house and harvest them from the bin to obtain possibly valuable spare parts, documentation, and accessories.

Re: Bits and PCs - a Computers and Tech Miscellany
Besides the obvious failure that the display was probably intended to show something other than those console messages, that doesn't look like a huge failure to me. I'd be more alarmed by the BSOD than that, which just looks like boring, non-failure start-up logging. (I don't think the messages actually indicate any thermal problem, just that the thermal zones are being configured, initialized, whatever).

The first thing I did when I bought daughter her new PC, dis-install the McAfee, and install WebRoot.
McAfee has been a ripoff for decades.

Yeah, it was just there and free for a couple years so I went with it out of laziness until this year.
The whole corporate slow boil the frog until they scream pricing structure is just tiresome.

Which Crumb *checks notes* already is. And anyone else can be added to upon receipt of the usual consideration.
