There's plenty of more appealing documentary or reality TV with some real "gob-smacking" wonder to it than in some dumb fiction series. Work it for people who don't know any better. But if you're awake and discerning, the contrivance is a grating insult on the intelligence.
you know its cool that you dont like that kind of show that you need an emotional connection with the main character to enjoy it, but i dont see why you have to insult someone who might like that sort of thing.

I was answering her question: "...or do you personally not like to watch films or shows without a clear cut "good guy"? by characterizing my attitidude toward dramas where the premise is such a strectch that it breaks the ability to suspend disbelief by saying figuratively to the producers: "Work it for people who don't know any better. If you bothered to read, you'd find that I'm not going so far as to blow this seriers totally off and will give it a few more tries. I suggest if you're going to mind other people's business, you do perhaps a more thorough job.

Anyway, I did enjoy this week's episode last night. I thought it was neat how Dexter was going on about how this couldn't be the Ice Truck Killer, blah-de-blah-de-blah, when Deb told him, "Turn around." Heh.

Yup, Jeremy killed himself. Finally killed someone who deserved it, as per Dexter.
I found it interesting that Dexter started to feel "paternal" instincts toward Jeremy. Perhaps he isn't quite the sociopath he's supposed to be. Or maybe he is being influenced by his interactions with Rita's kids.
I understand that the original books has Dexter far less sympathetic. I aim to read those books, but not before the end of the television series.

The TWoP discussions I read claim the book shows everything from Dexter's POV. He thinks of himself as an irredeemable psychopath and that POV would inform the book's direction. This leaves the TV writers free to show how things really are outside Dexter's view. They are also free to flesh out the tertiary characters more, since the book doesn't.

Oooh, good point, Sharon. This is more of Dexter "pretending" to be "human", acting according to "Harry's Rules".
I'm really thrilled by this perspective! I'm gonna start thinking about when does "pretending" become so ingrained, so intuitive...that it becomes indistinguishable (even to Dexter) from "real".
Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I saw "Dexter" for the first time last night. I missed the beginning, so did not understand what the premise was, i.e., what's so special about Dexter. Wondered if he was an alien or something. I knew if I searched here, though, someone would explain it to me!
I can't quite decide if I like it or not, but I might be willing to see another one.
You may want to rent season 1, as the background (why he is a sociopath, how he learned to "fake it", etc.) is important to following and enjoying the story...IMO anyway.

I recently started watching Dexter the way I start watching a lot of shows: The roomie is watching it and one day I'm walking through the living room and get hooked.
We're only a few episodes into season 2 (squian bought the show on iTunes) but I'm a fan.
Yay! We can talk about it while we wait (interminably) for Season Four in the fall.
I enjoyed the second season almost as much as the first. The issues keep coming hard and fast, right from the start. How will Dexter handle this? What's he gonna do about that? An interesting ending, too.
It's a fun ride. I strongly suggest skipping the final season, however, even though the penultimate season ends with a cliffhanger. It doesn't go anywhere good, and the alleged "resolution" is a disappointing, depressing mess. Better just to imagine how it ends yourself.

I can't skip the final season, I have to watch things through - no matter how they end.
I understand the compulsion - only in the last few years have I been able to resist it. We're only trying to save you from that last season. Oof.
I think I liked the show longer than most. I got through season 6 and part of 7 before it started to annoy me, but I was still curious enough to finish it.
