We got approved for that apartment we were trying to get today. We get to sign the lease and start moving in on Monday.

We're moving back to Tuscaloosa (where we lived before Brett got sick and we had to move closer to Children's Hospital in B-ham). We found a really nice townhouse in a very quiet area of town.

Link to apartment.

This is the place where we want to raise our boys. :cheerful:

The next time I bitch about my job, tell me to sit down and shut up.

Our company is scrapping our iSeries--or whatever the fuck IBM is calling it this week--in favor of an Oracle machine. This was a scary prospect, as I have been working on this line of midrange computers since 1982. (Hey, I was 20 when I got my first programming job, all right?! :glare:) I have zero experience on any other non-personal computers.

Many companies would consider dumping their whole IT staff in favor of hiring developers who know about the incoming machines.

Not my employers.

My employers have decided that the IT department's business knowledge is as important as our technical knowledge. So they are hiring a consulting firm to redevelop our existing systems, keeping us in the loop throughout. This will give us the opportunity to learn as we work.

But that's not all. Those of us with no Java experience--the chosen development language for this project--will be going to classes in order to learn it and will be reimbursed upon successful completion.

My boss came by my desk today to inform me that the company will allow us Java students as many hours during the work week as we need to make sure we're able to do the class work. Even if this means some of our "gotta have it" tasks take a backseat.

Gosh, I love working here!

I got a call today from my internet provider asking me whether I would like to stay on for another year (which I was going to anyway, I can't remember having had a single problem in the 5 years I have been with them) for 5 euros per month less than I'm paying now. :stunned:

Out of curiosity, what would you normally be developing in?

It's a long time since I heard RPG. I thought it wasn't being used any more. The skills should be fairly easily transferrable though as the same basic ideas still apply: low coupling, high cohesion, separation of concerns, data hiding and so forth.
