I checked out the IMDB page for it, and one of the discussion threads was asking about why they drugged her.

And in which other people were talking about how she was hysterical and unhinged and did need to be sedated.

I fixed the link, thanks. I find it tricky to do those right on the IPad and that's all I brought to Conference.

Another thing I learned from the book is the reason 1977 is when people got serious about domestic violence is that was the year of the "Burning Bed" case. It was the publicity about how all the cops knew that woman was being abused and didn't or couldn't help her that got the laws changed.

I'm afraid not. It was shocking to my eyes to see her forcibly sedated, but the doctor and her husband are portrayed as noble in this endeavor, doing what they have to do for her own good.

Yeah, no. She cried for like 30 seconds when she first heard but stopped when Glenn Ford shook her Airplane-style, and even those 30 seconds of tears were really rather restrained. It's Donna Reed: pretty much the polar opposite of hysterical in any given circumstance.

She wasn't crying, screaming or doing anything besides asking questions when the doctor hatched the "put her to sleep" plan, so I don't see how anyone, even if they thought she needed forcible sedation for round one, could consider her so unhinged she needed a harder round two.

Just watched this interview with Dustin Hoffman about why he made Tootsie. Trust me, it's awesome.

I heard him interviewed on "Fresh Air" recently, and he was similarly fascinating. He spoke of how the role really opened his eyes about how women and men are treated differently.

For instance, he mentioned that they decided to test the makeup by having him meet with people who didn't know he was a man in drag, to see how they reacted. He said he was surprised at how men would look him up-and-down, decide that he wasn't attractive, and from that point onward, ignore him. He said that he was surprised to learn how many men seem to simply ignore any woman they don't deem attractive.

Speaking of sexism and Wimbledon. All the press has been going on about how Andy Murray is the first Briton to win in 77 years, completely ignoring the woman who won in 1977.

The news reports that I heard all made the point that he was the first Brit in 77 years to win the Men's Singles Champion title.

It's been a combination here, sometimes saying first brit in 77 years to win Wimbledon, sometimes saying first male to win a Wimbledon championship in 77 years.

I know because each time the say the first Sou says "What about Virginia Wade?!" and each time the say the second she says "What about John Lloyd and Jamie Murray?!" (both won the mixed championship).

Doubles don't count in any form. The Bryan twins are dominant in a historic fashion, but many people lament the lack of a male tennis champion.

Gender and Digital Identity I haven't finished reading this yet, so I can't fully recommend it. It's about the persistent abuse that women who are at all visible on the internet receive. I'm mostly parking it here so I don't forget to finish it.

I find it depressingly true.

I would add that you can see the same sort of thing in the south with the tongue bath that some give "traditional" southern life or values. This accompanies a rejection of mainstream USA values.

I tried an experiment once to see what effect an online gender switch would do. I posted on a site where I could easily hold my own and took a huge amount of abuse as a female, most of it completely irrelevant and highly sexual. I left and went back 6 months later using a name that sounded male and it was if my IQ had just jumped up 50 points and oddly enough no one sent me little PMs asking me what I was wearing or if I wanted to get laid. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

There is a double-standard, for sure. I think I would like to get PMs asking me what I was wearing or if I wanted to get laid. I've never had that problem. :(
