I liked that post better without the quote, where it looked like you were saying that you were no fan of visiting Janet's family.

Re: What's up with you?
I'm traveling to Arizona on Thursday and I'll be there until Tuesday. My best friend since grade school's mom died on Valentine's Day, and the memorial is this weekend. Six weeks seems like a long time, but what do I know? At least it gave me time to procure the plane tickets and time off work.
My friend had called me on Feb 12 and said it was now or never if I wanted to come out and visit her mom, and even though it was a holiday weekend, I still just couldn't make it happen all last-minute. I was extremely disappointed.
Still I am looking forward to spending time with my friend and her kids, even though it's not under the best of circumstances.

Re: What's up with you?
I was going to tell you to go to a City match when you're in Manchester. Then I remembered who I was talking to.
I am also not a fan of visiting my family. I'm actually known for it. The last time someone suggested a joint family vacation I told them I would kill one of them if I were stuck in a house with them all. But my mom doesn't drive on expressways anymore and someone has to deliver her.

Re: What's up with you?
My grandmother is being moved back to her assisted living place. Not because she's better -- she's still essentially dying -- but because the hospital can't really help her further beyond what hospice care can do. She'll still be in a hospital bed, but at least she'll be in her own room, which has been her home for the last 4-5 years and is furnished like her old house (which she lived in for, what, 70-odd years).
My Mom keeps talking to me like I'm being too optimistic about her chances. I'm not; although I suspect she will linger for some time, it's not so much out of wishful thinking as pessimism. Much as I love her, I don't think said lingering is good for anyone, including her, but I think that's what's going to happen anyway. I would actually be somewhat relieved to be wrong about that. Anyway, I'll keep patiently allowing my Mom to patiently explain the obvious to me. Arguing is not going to make her feel any better, while letting her provide motherly advice might.

Re: What's up with you?
I am gainfully employed again.
I'm not sold on the job - it's a more junior position than what I left. It's also a consultant position, and I'm definitely feeling like it - using PCs in the lab as my workstation for one.
Still it's experience in skills and technologies I haven't yet experienced, a product I actually can be happy to tell people I work on, and the pay is reasonable but not great. I'll slowly start working on getting the job to be the experience I want, or I'll start looking again after a few months. I have some hope for the former, though.

Re: What's up with you?
I have had a week. I took my new car to the auto body shop on Monday, opting to drive my old car instead of renting a vehicle. That was a mistake. Coming home from work I got a flat and Tuesday night I discovered a headlight had gone out. So there I've been, driving with a donut on the left front tire and with a popeye on the right.
The water heater I bought back in 2008 is showing signs of leaking so I have to remember who worked on it last time and get them back out here.
I was unable to get my hair clean anymore because of what they call "product buildup". Couldn't get shampoo through it, then couldn't get a comb through it after that. Finally called up my hairdresser to help me out. She admonished me for using great quantities of a cheap hairspray, saying that's what caused it. So now I own a huge can of Paul Mitchell hairspray. Ka-ching. $$
But not everything has been bad. Some has been good or neutral, at least.
I think I may have mentioned our Sunday Assembly group is planning a girls' women's choir next month. Friday night we had our first rehearsal. I think it's going to turn out okay. Here's a video of what it should be like, except for, you know ... the men. I floated the idea of having the band strike up "We Are The Champions" like you're supposed to but I don't think it'll happen.
Last night I went on a date. Nice enough guy but boring. The conversation didn't get going until I started talking about books, having been told by the mutual friend who set us up that he was a reader. Then we had a great time yakking it up. I'm sure the waiters were finally glad to see the back of us when we left.
And now ... dammit, Monday coming again?! Cheese.

I was trying to be funny, inasmuch as I interpreted "celebrating life" as a category encompassing all the listed activities, so the joke was that I endorsed all the activities but rejected the category. That being said, I do dislike the phrasing. For me life something to be endured, tolerated, accepted, hopefully enjoyed and maybe even embraced, but not celebrated. It's probably a semantic nitpick but it just rubs me the wrong way. It's akin to calling life a "gift" which I believe I've grumbled about before.

Okay, I get it now and I understand how that would chafe.
Now, here's why it doesn't chafe me:
I'm seeing the opposite side of "be good so you can go to heaven when you die". The message here is that there may or may not be an afterlife. However, we know damned well that this life exists so let's celebrate--substitute endure, tolerate, accept, enjoy, whatever works--it while we have it.
Which is probably what you see, too. I'm just saying that makes me feel like celebrating and I get that (now) it doesn't do that for you.

You're absolutely right, and mostly what I ended up doing was babysitting. Apparently the dearly departed was the main babysitter, and the grandfather on the other side had a horrifying accident on Friday, so the other grandmother became suddenly unavailable, so I just kept an eye on the kids while the parents took care of all the crap they had to take care of. I'm going home tomorrow.

We're moving across the river to Minneapolis! It's a good move, nice neighborhood, and it fell into our laps, but it's still going to be weird being in the other Twin City after 15+ years in St. Paul.

I knew a girl in Minneapolis. She was also known in St.Paul, she used to come over to visit me. She was known as "The Tail Of Two Cities." Groucho Marx

Re: What's up with you?
Not a grandma update. Got nothing new there for now.
On the main home computer, the stable one with all the pictures and stuff on it, not necessarily well backed up -- just suddenly bricked. The PC repair place I took it to can't do a damned thing with it. There may be a file recovery service that can do something with it, but I'm kinda fucked 'cause there were a lot of pictures on there I never got around to backing up, except for a few CDs worth from back when it made sense to back up pics on CDs (i.e., several years ago).
Not to mention the fun of either replacing the HD or getting a new 'puter. I can save a bit of money by swapping out the HD, but not a whole fuck of a lot.

Re: What's up with you?
Recovering the data from the hard drive should be doable. Do you have the skills to remove the drive and install it in another computer? Do you have the resources, namely another computer chassis?

Re: What's up with you?
Yeah depending on how it bricked it should be recoverable.
If you go for cheap you can find replacement drives for $30-$60
If the platters are still good and there wasn't a major head crash the data is all still there. Data recovery places will often take it to a clean room, open it up and transfer the platters to their own system to then copy over to a new drive.

Not really, on either count.

That's the plan. If they were better, I would let them go ahead and swap the HD. Since I'm on the hook for their diagnostic fee, which they'll waive if I have them do actual work -- but even subtracting the diagnostic fee, they're going to charge too much for it to be worth it. And I'd still be no closer to file recovery, I'd just have a new HD with nothin'.
Thought I was being smrt, taking the rig to an actual computer repair place rather than Best Buy or some shit. But it doesn't look like these guys are any better.
