Re: cilantro?
I like it. I don't get the hate either; while it's not my favorite (garlic! garlic! garlic!), I do eat it. A local restaurant makes this orgasmic white chili; they use white beans, chicken, cilantro, and those flavored tortilla strips. It's served with a little cup-thing of sour cream on the side.

I'm neutral. It depends on what it's in.
Now if you're talking basil...

Re: cilantro?
I like it, and I've heard some compelling arguments about a possible genetic component to the soapy taste some people identify with cilantro. So it ain't the cilantro, it's your genes.

Re: cilantro?
I like cilantro a lot - and even more when it's coriander.
I'll happily chew on a sprig just for the flavour on it's own.

Why the hell would you make an odd flavored ice cream out of something you find to be nasty-ass? I mean, I would hope that a great chef wouldn't have to invent shit s/he wouldn't eat.

heh. this is just my twisted train of thought, but i think it's a great chef who can turn something they personally think is gross into something so interesting that even s/he would take a bite or two .
nevermind the fact that weird-flavoured ice creams are a pet project of mine. so far we have strawberry-clove, milk chocolate-curry, and tahitian vanilla (the latter isn't so weird, but the neopolitan sampler needed a straightforward flavour in there somewhere), nutmeg, and cinnamon. for sorbets we have clove-carrot, lavender-peach, litchi-lime, thyme-mint, and star anise.

And how much.
It's not my favorite herb (that would be "The Herb Superb"), but it's not down there with tarragon.

Have you tried sauer kraut ice cream? I hear it tastes kinda like lime.

Re: cilantro?
Is cilantro often called lemongrass on Asian restaurant menus?
I do notice a distinct "lemon-scented lysol"-type flavor in foods with "lemongrass".
I *love* Mexican food from all sorts of restaurants, so odds are I've had plenty of food with cilantro in it and loved it. So I'm not exactly sure what cilantro tastes like.
But I had some "fajita pizza" from Papa John's like, last week and the sauce was horrible. That might have been due to too much cilantro... Not sure. It wasn't good tho. To be safe, I would recommend that cilantro-haters avoid that pizza like the plague.

Re: cilantro?
Lemongrass is a different herb, erimir. It looks like actual blades of grass or chives, whereas cilantro is leafy, more like parsley.
I'm not a huge fan (I have citrus issues) but it just tastes like lemon to me, not dishwashing soap.

Re: cilantro?
I love cilantro in salsa and black bean soup. Fresh is the only way to eat it. But then I also love citrus-- especially lime flavors. If nothing else, I've always got a box of lime popsicles in my freezer. To me cilantro tastes fresh and adds an extra cooling ping to Mexican foods. Lemongrass is an excellent dried herb to keep on hand-- works well in tomato soups and any Thai dish.

OMG those all sound superb. I love crazy ice cream flavors, and there is not a flavor in that bunch that I don't adore... including and especially clove and anise.

I kind of doubt it was cilantro. My biggest beef (no pun intended) with Papa John's is that they don't include cilantro on pizzas that obviously call for it. See my previous post about BBQ chicken pizza. Unless you're in New Mexico or something, in which case I wouldnt' put it past them.

Re: cilantro?
I have a confession. I no longer hate cilantro. Now I'm not saying I'm ready to go roll in fields of it, but it's not bad.
