Scottish Power aren't allowed to cut off the electricity supply to a domestic dwelling but they are allowed to get a warrant to install a prepayment meter in the home for large debts (mine was £400 or so). £5 / week of my electricity goes to Scottish Power to pay off the debt and I get the rest. There is a £14 "emergency supply" - enough for about a week or so before the meter runs completely dry. I have no intention of letting that happen.

It's the same with water supply. The companies are not allowed to cut off the supply to domestic dwellings unless there is a serious shortage (and that hasn't happened in a long while).

It didn't used to be that way. Used to be if you couldn't pay the bills you went to prison or the poor house (that happened to my father when he was a boy). That was before things like National Insurance and such.

True. But I'd hate to be in the middle of something and only after it is too late realize I forgot to prepay.

Certainly an easier way to watch the energy consumption too.

I'll have a go at that one:-

NTL is now Virginmedia and they provide 'phone, broadband etc

With a prepayment meter you have to feed a meter to continue getting an electricity supply. It used to require coins but those meters were always being robbed so now they take coded cards which you buy - prepaid like postage stamps and also bought from the Post-Office.

By "duds" I presume James means that they didn't work his meter.

As I read it Watser? Jim is talking about two separate bills - he's paid his NTL bill :cheer:

and got some prepaid tokens for the electricity meter - some of which wouldn't work. :sadcheer:

I managed to get my meter problem sorted this morning. The lass at Scottish Power said they might have been left in the cold or damp so I polished them with a towel and managed to get the meter to read all the cards :yay:

I now have £60 worth of electricity in the meter which should be enough to see me to the end of January, though I'll have to watch it as I've just switched the heating on and that chews up juice. (I had to switch it on as it's :shiver:
