I just took my new cooker back - or to be precise to another branch of the same store.
I "cooked" fish and chips last night.
Well "cooked" is overstating it, at least the fish wasn't sushi!
'That hotplate isn't really getting hot'
Assistant pugs in cooker and turns on hotplate.
I put my hand on the hotplate and wait for something to happen.
Slowly it begins to warm.
"There's nothing wrong with that! These hotplates are not designed to heat up quickly - they heat up slowly and stay hot!"
'I've had one of these for years - it's not working properly'
"They must have changed the model of hotplate."
'But the same hotplate on the one I took back three days ago (the one with the dirty grill pan inside) worked fine!'
"You can't put your hand on that hotplate now".
True enough, I couldn't. It was a bit too hot for that!
'It's not satisfactory! Last night the fish and chips didn't brown. The night before the pressure cooker didn't get up to pressure!'
"I'll have a word with the manager ......."
"It's getting hot so there's nothing wrong"
'It's contolled by a thermostat - perhaps it's cutting out prematurely?'
"

I suppose it could be ... ...... I'll have a word with the manager ......"
"You can have a replacement but if this doesn't work it's the design!"
I take home the sealed box. Plug in the cooker and turn on the hotplate.
I can keep my hand on the hotplate for all of three seconds before it gets too hot to bear.
