Damn tea, you're flying through them. Kudos. Can I recommend Raymond E. Feist's Magician after you finish Deathly Hallows?

Re: What are you reading?
I've got boxes of books my dad had to leave behind, at least for now, when he moved, so I'm going through the ones that look interesting. I read the first book of A Wizard in Rhyme, by Christopher Stasheff, Her Majesty's Wizard, and am now on the second, The Oathbound Wizard. I really didn't like it at first, because one of the big premises of the story is that in this world the early Christian church is completely true, good and evil are total absolutes, and the Devil really is sitting there waiting to drag you to hell even for so simple a thing as non-belief. It fits fine with the story, but I struggled because the only thing I could think of for most of the first book is how much it would suck to live there. Still, I finished it, and I found I mostly enjoyed it, so I started the second one.

teasasue, I read an article recently about the Harry Potter books and how they can have a Satanic affect on people. Particularly children.
I know you are a Christian and I wonder how you feel about this aspect of the books. Seeing as they deal in magick and spells and stuff.
I love the books myself but, as you know, am not a believer in god. I just wonder if you've thought about that side of the Harry Potter books.
I will try and find the article if you want but I just wondered about your views. Of course, any other Christian's views on this are also welcome.
Thanks

After reading about Hamas and A-stan, I needed something lighter, so I'm reading Medium Raw by Tony Bourdain. So far, so good.

I love the books, and as far as it bothering me because I am a Christian, I think some people just like to have things to complain about. They are books for entertainment, just like movies and TV shows. As far as the magick and spells and things, there is witches in the bible and dragons and unicorns and different things, so it doenst bother me. I love them, and I cant wait to get the money to buy the set for my self.
I think I know the article you are talking about there was a big to do when the books and movies came out, or walmart will not even sell the Harry Potter books. I really believe that some people just like to complain to complain and there is nothing wrong with them. God help if you check in to the other kinds of books I read if you think these would bother me because I am Christian.

I am stubbornly refusing to read any of these since I am sick of the sight of them. My co-workers and I have decided that Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is going to be 2014's Love Story - whenever you go into a used book store (assuming they still exist), you'll see 27 copies languishing on the shelves. The second in the series is 2015's Jonathan Livingston Seagul.

Re: What are you reading?
It's worth pointing out that Rowling herself is a Christian.
I restarted Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice from the beginning because I'd forgotten half the plot. I'd forgotten how hilarious it is.

Re: What are you reading?
I think it's worth mentioning that most religious people aren't uptight nutcases. Like the ranting crazy people on city streets, the religiously deranged are simply so vocal and say such outlandish things that they stand out from the crowd.
If I ever do encounter in person one of the "Harry Potter is Satanic!" crowd, I'm going to ask them if they seriously believe magic is real, and let out a hearty guffaw.

Re-reading Tale of Two Cities after watching an epic old black and white film version. Beginning Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Also lagging through a pair of Western Civalization textbooks I got from Godswill which both start in the 15th century.

Re: What are you reading?
I just finished The Man Who Loved Books Too Much, about a book thief with strange motivations and an odd way of justifying how he "gets" his books.
Just started On The Beach, by Nevil Shute. I may be beginning an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it phase after hearing someone go on and on about just such a book. Upon reading that Newt Gingrich wrote the forward, and then the negative Amazon reviews I decided this particular book was not for me. But one of those reviewers thoughtfully provided a list of better ones, so off I go.

Re: What are you reading?
The Bloody Shirt: Terror after Appomattox by Stephen Budiansky.
It was unsettling, to say the least, to read about the consequences of the original people crying, "I want my country back!" and the development of the myth of The South. The book mostly discussed some events in South Carolina and Mississippi, but I am more interested in Georgia and Alabama. If you know of any good books about the history of Reconstruction in GA or AL, please let me know.

Yeah, really. You can't say something stupid interesting like that and just let it lie.

Sounds intriguing; I may have to give this a try.

Let me know how this turns out, too. I think I'm ready for some fictional end o' world scenarios.

Re: What are you reading?
I've met some of the anti-Harry Potter Christians. They aren't particularly different or interesting. Of course, as a librarian I'm not allowed to scoff at people to their faces, so taunting them was out of the question. I mostly just shook my head after they left the bookmobile.
I have a weird theory about what's really going on with the anti-Potter people. If you read the books, you may notice that many of the problems are caused by adults keeping information from the kids in the books. Often if the adults were honest and up front with Harry about what the hell is going on, he wouldn't go running off into danger and/or mess up their plans. Sometimes I think what these censors are really afraid of is not kids being taught witchcraft, but kids being taught that they can handle more information that adults are willing to dole out and it's a bad idea for adults to try to keep it from them. That's the kind of message that really puts the wind up a censor.

I just finished this one, and it was okay, but I don't think it's really worth the hype.
I just started Ghostwritten by David Mitchell, however, and he's definitely worth the hype he's gotten lately. He's a great writer and this is just his first book.

Re: What are you reading?
I bought this soon after the Oscar Grant verdict, and it just arrived today. I've been waiting for it, because it seems like everything I read in the news just makes this more and more timely.
If you want the flavor of Kristian Williams' position, he gave a talk at the Continental Club in Oakland, which is available for streaming or download from this website:

He also spoke briefly here:
