Default Sometimes people you haven't ever heard of die

Stanislav Petrov, who saved the world, dies without fanfare aged 77 | Metro News

From the link, with my emphasisThe public only learned of his death because Karl Schumacher, a German political activist, had phoned Petrov to wish him a happy birthday on September 7. But when he got through he was told by Petrov’s son Dmitri that he had passed away on May 19, in his home in Fryazno, a Moscow suburb where he lived alone on a pension.

Obituary: Keith Murdoch, the disgraced All Black who disappeared - BBC News

From the linkThe dust-up at the Angel Hotel made headline news in the UK and New Zealand, and the press pack in Auckland camped out at the airport to await Murdoch's return.
He never made it there. It's believed he swapped flights in Singapore, after shaving his moustache to avoid detection, and flew instead to Perth in Western Australia. From there, he retreated to the wilderness of the Outback and disappeared.
[...]
There were only four recorded encounters with him in the almost 46 years after he boarded the flight from London.

Top NHS Doctor Alfa Saadu Dies From Coronavirus After Returning From Retirement

From the linkToday at approx 7.30am, Dr Alfa Saadu (my dad) died of the coronavirus. He had been fighting the virus for two weeks but he could not fight anymore. The NHS were amazing and did everything they could.

My dad was a living legend, worked for the NHS for nearly 40 years saving people’s lives here and in Africa. Up until he got sick, he was still working part-time saving people.

I am pretty bummed to hear about Dr. Murrin's passing. I was going to go to the SHEAR conference when it was in Boston last summer to hear him (amongst other scholars) but I had conflicting commitments and it would have been s stretch on the budget so I didn't go... :sadcheer:

John Murrin truly was a historian's historian, but most people outside the the field of colonial American history / history of the early American republic have never heard of him because his forte was essays. Two years ago he put out a core collection of his essays, Rethinking America: From Empire to Republic -- here's an excerpt from a review of that:

Quote:
Here is a timely gift to the coming generation of early American historian...John M. Murrin is a brilliant, generous, and unpretentious master of American colonial and revolutionary history. For decades he taught at Princeton University, turning out blue-chip scholars and rubbing shoulders with the best and brightest in the field. But unlike most of his peers, Murrin wrote essays, not books, and for this reason his impact might easily be lost on a new generation already weighed down by the hundreds of “must-read” monographs that have landed on our reading lists since the 1960s...

This anthology is arranged thematically. First up...is a blockbuster essay from 1980, “The Great Inversion, or Court versus Country.” In sixty-seven pages of sustained analysis that is at once synthetic and densely learned...[r]eaders will learn in this first essay that Murrin’s arguments demand careful attention. Unwilling to let schematic frameworks or theoretical determinants do the heavy lifting, Murrin anchors his explanations in narratives that force the reader to know who was who in British ministries and exactly what took place in American legislatures, elections, and counting houses. It is the skillful blending of evidentiary specifics with high-altitude narrative arcs that mark this as a Murrin piece. It is worth the investment, as are the ten pieces that follow.
Murrin was very active in SHEAR, the Society of the History of the Early American Republic, and the historians he was schooled by, instructed and/or collaborated reads like a Who's Who in the field (more people you guys have probably never heard of, so...). Murrin was also known for his sly sense of humor that often found its way into his writing. For example one of his essays examines the importance of the religious revival known as the First Great Awakening in the 1740s by imagining that it never took place, enthusiastically describing a series of "what if" scenarios:
What if divisive jackwagon Gilbert Tennant died in that lightning strike that he actually survived in RL? :storm:
What if George Whitfield, while traveling to America during the War of Jenkins's Ear, had been captured by the Spanish who then threw his trouble-making Methodist ass into a Spanish dungeon? (Right? Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!) :inquisit: :prisoner: :primate:
What if Mr. "Sinner In the Hands Of An Angry God" Jonathan Edwards had been rendered mysteriously and totally catatonic, unable to deliver his renowned fire and brimstone sermons? :gah:

Not much of an awakening without those three asshats, buckos.

RIP Professor Murrin.

Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth—The judge who stood up to Pakistan's military

From the linkAs chief justice of Peshawar High Court (PHC), he passed judgments that angered both the military and the government - including a death sentence on exiled former ruler General Pervez Musharraf that made headlines around the world. He also challenged the establishment on human rights abuses, striking down a law under which the military ran secret internment centres, and acquitting dozens of people convicted under anti-terrorism laws for lack of evidence.

Justice Seth's death is being seen as a major setback in a country where the military has been expanding its influence again in recent years.

Jean-Pierre Adams: Former France international dies after 39 years in coma - BBC Sport

From the lnkOn the day of Adams' operation to repair a damaged tendon in his knee ... many staff at the hospital in Lyon were on strike. His operation still went ahead, with the anaesthetist looking after eight patients, including Adams, at the same time. Adams was supervised by a trainee, who later said: "I was not up to the task I was entrusted with." Between the anaesthetist and trainee, numerous errors were made, causing Adams to suffer a cardiac arrest and brain damage.

Adams was discharged from hospital after 15 months and had been cared for at home in Nimes by his wife, Bernadette, ever since.

'Man of the Hole': Last of his tribe dies in Brazil | BBC

From the linkThe man, whose name was not known, had lived in total isolation for the past 26 years. He was known as Man of the Hole because he dug deep holes, some of which he used to trap animals while others appear to be hiding spaces.

His body was found on 23 August in a hammock outside his straw hut. There were no signs of violence. The man was the last of an indigenous group whose other remaining six members were killed in 1995.
