I'm sure I've said it before but I was so surprised by how much California there is north of the bay area that one time I drove from LA to Portland.

Daughter had something wrong with her eye, so she went to have an ophthalmologist check it out. Ophthalmologist said it was something viral, and had her go take a COVID-19 test. Until we get the results back, we're wearing masks if we're in the same room with her, and she gets one of the two bathrooms in the house. (Joy.)

We have a lot of family in the area, from Sacramento, Eureka, Chico. When I was growing up, my grandma lived in Crescent City, which is so far north that you actually have to drive through Medford Oregon to get there.

Most of the time driving up to Grandma's from LA, we'd make 2 days of it, staying overnight in Redding. But if one or the other of us couldn't afford enough time off work to do that, we'd do it in a day. I remember one year we left home before 5 in the morning, hit morning rush hour traffic in Sacramento around 9 (typically considered NorCal by SoCal people), and still didn't get to Grandma's until about 10 that night.

So yeah I've been acutely aware of just how tall this fucking state is most of my life.

It is cool to be in the Bay Area, right in the middle. I'm literally halfway between my mom's up north and my sisters' in LA.

(Last time, streaming issues had resulted in my giving up during the Christmas songs.) Now I see there's a whole section of vintage Los Lobos songs after that, and they're good.

Daughter gave me a book of coupons for Hanukkah. Tonight, I cashed in her coupon for watching one holiday movie with me to introduce her to "Rare Exports," a Finnish movie about the discovery--and attempted unleashing--of the original, less-than-cheery Santa Clause. I wonder is Miisa is familiar with it.

DEFINITELY stick around for the closing credits. (Not really closing credits--I misremembered that bit; it's actually the post-climax coda.)

Rare Exports (2010) - IMDb

I can confirm that Miisa is indeed familiar with that movie.

It is one of the christmas films I watch. Turns out the director is absolutely terrible, but it isn't apparent in this film as it suits his rough style. Takes a few liberties with the Joulupukki myth, but not as many as you'd think.

Daughter is not a fan of rom-coms or typical feel-good holiday movies. (I, on the other hand, binge-watched both seasons of that Norwegian rom-com series, "Home for Christmas," as well as several different versions of "A Christmas Carol."*)
"Rare Exports" perfectly accommodated both our movie-watching proclivities.

___________
* By-the-bye, I very much enjoyed the BBC's 2019 miniseries version of that story. It entirely reimagines the details, while staying true to the spirit and visiting-ghosts conceit, in a way that does the story justice. That "giddy as a school boy" Christmas morning, as Scrooge wakes up and realizes it's still Christmas, is particularly hard for an actor to pull off. The BBC avoids it.

We celebrated having decent internet by binge watching Good Omens and Tudor Monastery Farm. I adore David Tennant - he could make reading a telephone book interesting.

Oldest son flew to NY yesterday to spend the next several months as night nurse to youngest son's new baby. Will be the first time we haven't had him in the house with us in nearly a decade.

Our Governor is going to announce some rollbacks to the order closing bars and restaurants. They've been closed for everything but take out since mid-November.

And the Olympic runner started the celebration dance 10m ahead of the finish line, tripped, fell, won Bronze.

Quiet weekend. Got the trash taken out to the curb, used a Hanukkah-gift coupon from our daughter to get her to watch a rom-com with me (not REALLY a rom-com--"Rapturepalooza," starring Anna Kendrick, and my favorite part of the movie is the first five minutes, when the Rapture happens and the cameras capture slow-motion images of bowling balls, beer bottles, food, and empty clothes falling to the floor).

Today, bought the Kindle version of "You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey," by Amber Ruffin and her sister Lacey Lamar, and have read nearly half--much of it out loud to Mrs. S. Stories of what it's like to be Black in America, told with Amber's sense of humor. Recommended.

Now watching an old episode of "Rosemary & Thyme" with Mrs. S and daughter.

For those not familiar with Amber Ruffin: she's a wrier for Seth Meyers, and now has her own show on Peacock.

I made a mug of tea, added some milk, and then decided to grab a yogurt pot from the fridge when I returned the milk container. But I was thinking about the best way to debug the next stage of a program I'm coding, and absent-mindedly grabbed a bottle of orange juice from the fridge and added a dollop of orange juice to my tea, before thinking, "What the hell am I doing?"

I thought about throwing the orange-juice-flavoured tea away, but it's actually quite nice. I'm drinking it as I write this.
