Here in the US, socialism is considered the slipperiest of slopes toward communism, to the point that many consider them to be more or less the same.
Of course, these are the same people who nitpick about the difference between a democracy and a republic, as if it refutes anything their filthy socialist enemies say about the current threats to democracy.

The article does not afaics explain why they couldn't go ahead with the exhibition and ignore the Chinese demands. Perhaps the exhibits were actually from Inner Mongolia and controlled by the the Chinese govt?

Two of my interests, tennis and being disturbed about the Chinese government, come together here. (And a third, not not getting round to posting things as they happen ... because I tend to assume Kam has already posted everything.)
Peng Shuai is one of China's top female tennis players, and has been ranked #1 in the world in doubles, #14 in singles. On 2 November she posted an allegation on Weibo (China's Twitter) that Zhang Gaoli had sexually assaulted her. Zhang was a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, headed by Xi Jinping.

Since then, concerns have been mounting. Two of the primary voices are the WTA, Women's Tennis Association, who are threatening to pull their events out of China (they have a lot, generating a lot of their income), and the International Olympic Committee ... who seem to be totally supportive of the CCP and determined not to question the winter olympics to be held in Beijing.
She's not dead - no falling from a window of Vorster Square or committing suicide by shooting herself 5 times in the back of the head - but it's pretty clear she's under some pressure. Subtle and deniable pressure. Probably things like implied threats against her family.
Chinese state media claimed she wrote an email saying she's safe and well and just wants to spend some time at home ... with a screenshot apparently including a typing cursor. No one believes this (except the IOC).

I was careful to specify the cartoon version of Winnie because it is still protected by Disney's copyright.
And it's Disney's design for Winnie that is used as the comparison for Xi, not that horror show.
(Can you tell I watched the recent John Oliver episode that discussed public domain and Disney?)
