Li warned colleagues on social media in late December about a mysterious virus that would become the coronavirus epidemic and was detained by police in Wuhan on 3 January for “spreading false rumours”. He was forced to sign a police document to admit he had breached the law and had “seriously disrupted social order.”

For all the continuing censorship of posts about Dr Li, we seem to be hearing a lot more from Chinese people.

A long time ago I remember reading about how new virus variants would tend to develop in China because of close proximity and shear numbers of the farming of swine, poultry and waterfowl and human habitation. Viruses could be transmitted and modified by interspecies exchange.

I heard recently on NPR that it was also thought other wildlife could contribute to the new strains, as apparently happened with SARS and some weird cat like thing they were eating. Specifically, something about bats in relation to corona. It was thought that intermediate carriers would be needed between wildlife and humans. This is being rethought because of research that showed the bat corona virus could infect human cells directly. This was done in the lab, so it's not clear how likely it would work in real world circumstances.

They closed a high school in our district today, because a staffer was potentially exposed. They did it for "an abundance of caution" - that's almost an understatement. I'm also wondering how a one day closure will prevent infection from spreading - it makes me wonder if they will close it for Friday, too.
