Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
I understand Jack Dorsey has come up with something to challenge Twitter, but I can't remember what it's called and can't be bothered to look it up right now.

It's called Blue Sky
The thing where the top replies to any big tweet/account are full of assholes saying the stupidest shit imaginable or something like " " is starting to really grate, so I will try it out if I get an invite...

I joined Tribel. It reminds me of a cross between FB and Twitter, but I like the "Breaking" option.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
The last month or so my facebook feed has turned into mostly suggested posts and ads, but like, for a different person. I have scrolled past so so many “When you see it” close up shot of a truck engine or other mechanical part that presumes I have some sort of specific car mechanic knowledge. No I didn’t see it, I was never going to see it, I don’t know what I’m looking at!
That is between the bad Marvel and old TV memes, It’s like I’ve been set to “Generic American” and it’s horrifying. I’m just here to see kitten photos!

Much like being in Canada and getting everything in French despite being geographically closer to Mexico than Quebec.

I can drive to Mexico in two days! It takes four to Quebec!

Try to get into "Generic American Lady" category. Search for chardonnays and yoga pants and see what happens.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
UK mental health charities handed sensitive data to Facebook for targeted ads | Mental health | The Guardian
Quote:
The data was sent via a tracking tool embedded in the charities’ websites and included details of webpages a user visited and buttons they clicked across content linked to depression, self-harm and eating disorders.
It also included details of when users requested support – such as clicking a link saying “I need help” – and when they viewed webpages to access online chat tools. Some of the pages that triggered data-sharing with Facebook were aimed specifically at children, including a page aimed at 11- to 18-year-olds offering advice on suicidal thoughts.
The data sent to Facebook during the Observer’s analysis did not include details of conversations between charities and users or messages sent via chat tools. All the charities said such messages were confidential and stressed that they took service user privacy extremely seriously.
However, it often related to browsing users would usually expect to be private – including details of button clicks and page views across websites for the mental health charities Mind, Shout and Rethink Mental Illness, and eating disorder charity Beat.
The information was matched to IP address – an identifier that can usually be linked to an individual or household – and, in many cases, details of their Facebook account ID.
Most of the charities have now removed the tracking tool, known as Meta Pixel, from their websites.
|
In many other cases, such as if the individual doesn't have a Facebook account, the household info got leaked anyway. That's the beauty of using the IP address. This kind of pixel tracking existed before even cookies did.

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic with this. The linked article is also about the same type of tracking.
These UK medical organizations are willingly installing Facebook's tracking software on their own websites, without user (patient, even) notice or consent. Anybody who accesses the website is being tracked by Facebook, whether they have an account or not. I legit don't understand what you're just sayin', since it's literally the opposite of what's happening. Forgive me if I missed the joke.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Meta's Twitter competitor is here. It's called "Threads."
I won't be using it (yet).
#1. It's app only, and I refuse to install Meta apps on my phone.
#2. It doesn't have a "followers only" feed. I used Twitter timeline that only showed the people I followed. This was the only way to make the Twitter experience enjoyable.
Maybe I'll join when they have those features available.

I'm delighted that it's not yet available in the EU because they can't comply with legal requirements.

Re: Bend Over, Facebook is Back
Also, Meta are making big noises about implementing support for ActivityPub, the protocol that connects the "fediverse" (Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc), in Threads. So that users could in principle take their accounts and posts to another network. Yeah right.
In fact they probably want to embrace and extinguish ActivityPub.

So it must not be available in California either, right? Since the EU requirements aren't any more onerous than the California ones.

I couldn't be bothered to read all the details, but it might not be GDPR but the next nanny-state enforcement of freedom and liberty.
