One of the professors in our department is well-known for being ... less than helpful ... when it comes to his students. By "less than helpful," I mean his "teaching" strategy [as attested to by many, many students, and as witnessed by myself on a few occasions] consists of: walk in to the classroom; project a few Powerpoint slides which consist of a couple of bullet points in black text on a white background, with no explanation and no illustrations; read the slides verbatim; walk out.

He takes no questions from students if he can help it. If a student dares to ask a question, he doesn't answer and often berates them for presuming to ask. He makes not the slightest pretense that he gives a single, solitary damn about his responsibilities to the students, or about the profession of teaching.

Since he never explains anything, never takes questions, and never engages with the students, his classes seldom last more than 10 minutes.

He outright lies to the students. I've heard him do it on more than one occasion.

Needless to say, the students almost universally loathe him.

And, needless to say, those of us who actually take our profession and our responsibilities seriously think he's an absolute disgrace, and absolutely abhor the fact that he's doing our students such an enormous disservice.

Why on Earth he wasn't fired long ago is a mystery to me. Except ... he also happens to coach one of the sports teams. And while he probably couldn't be a worse or a more irresponsible teacher if he tried, he's evidently a good coach.

They have a big test tomorrow. He promised them a review session on Wednesday, which the students were anxious for since he hasn't taught them anything at all as of yet.*

The "review session" lasted 3 minutes. I know, because I timed it. He walked in, told them that the exam was still scheduled for Friday (he had cancelled both of the previous classes), told them there would be 30 questions on the exam -- and walked out.

So, a bunch of students came to me last night. Since the material they'd theoretically covered was on DNA structure, we talked about that, and I did what I could to [hopefully] prepare them for the exam.

This afternoon, I spent a bit of time talking with 3 more students in the class, hopefully providing a bit of help. Afterward, I went back to my office to grade some papers while they studied on their own. When I came back a while later to check on them, one of them had drawn a big heart on the chalkboard and written "We Love [My Name]" in it. D'awwww ...

I was kind of disappointed when it was erased for the next class.

Today, one of my colleagues told me that she'd heard from some students that we share that I'm helping the students in Professor Slackard's class. She warned me to be careful, because if Professor I-Don't-Give-a-Damn-About-the-Students finds out that I'm helping his students, he'll likely regard it as "interfering," and be upset.

Well, if he'd just do his damn job, I would have to do it for him, would I?

*Professor I-Don't-Give-a-Damn-About-the-Students had previously taught a course that I took over when I was hired by the college. For my first couple of years, several students who had taken the course with Professor I-Don't-Give-a-Damn-About-the-Students took it again, with me. [Because, as several outright told me, the rumor was that I was actually interested in teaching them stuff.] One of my colleagues once told me that, on the first day of classes, one of her students came to her and said, "I learned more from Professor [Me] on the first day of class than I did during an entire semester with Professor I-Don't-Give-a-Damn-About-the-Students."

I don't want to brag or nothing, but I've probably learned more from one of your posts (let alone any number of them) than anyone in a semester from Professor Slackard.

So, the exam was today. I had spent much of yesterday going over DNA synthesis and replication with students yesterday -- because that's what Professor Slacker had said would be on the exam. I spent a couple of hours earlier in the day going over the material with other students.

In short, I've taught DNA synthesis and replication to most of the students in the class over the past few days -- because Professor Slacker didn't even pretend to do so, but told them that that's what the test would be over.

It wasn't.

I had a couple of students in my office after the test was done, practically on the verge of tears -- vacillating between despair [I'll never get into Medical School!"] and rage. According to them, none of the test questions were on the material that they'd supposedly learned. And understandably, they aren't happy.

I provided what comfort and sympathetic support I could, but alas, there's nothing else that I can do. They speculated that Professor Slacker knows some blackmail-worthy secrets about the President and/or some members of the Board of Trustees. How else to explain the fact that he should have been fired long ago?

Maybe they're right.

Then, to top it off, they told me that the other male professor in the Department is flat-out sexually harassing female students. He comes up behind them and grabs them around the chest or by the hips, tells raunchy and extremely sexist jokes in class, and even comments about their bodies. He told one of them that she'd make an excellent stripper.

Ugh! According to them, I'm the only male professor in the department who a.) actually cares about teaching and b.) isn't trying to cop a feel off the female students. What the :censored: is going on here?

Don't get me wrong, I love my students and I [mostly] love my job -- but this is darned frustrating. [And I know this place well-enough to know that if I was stupid enough to go to the Administration and file complaints, I am the one who would get fired, not either of them.]

*Sigh* At least the students know that I'm on their side, and they have told me so very forcefully.

You mean sexual assault? This needs to be on video.

The time might come you'll have to testify in some way. Especially with Professor Groper on the staff.

I discussed the issue with a [female] colleague today, and she suggested that I bring the issue to the Dean of Female Students.

I'll talk with the two students on Monday, if I can, and ask them to consider going to the Dean. I'll ask them if there are any other students who might want to go to the Dean as well.

I don't want to pressure them into doing anything they don't want to do -- I can understand if they're afraid that word might get back that they filed a complaint, and that they'd be worried he might try to retaliate somehow.

So, I'll tell them that they don't have to make a decision right away -- to wait a day or two and then tell me what they want to do. If they want to go to the Dean, I'll go with them if they want my support. And my colleague said that if they'd feel more comfortable going with a female professor, she'll go with them.

***

I told each of the students, "If I ever do or say anything that you think is inappropriate or that makes you uncomfortable, you should tell me; I promise you that I want to know if I do so, and I won't be upset."

I've hugged both of them at one time or another, after all.

"No," they both replied, "if you hug someone, it's to show support, not because you're trying to cop a feel." Both of them then stood up and ... hugged me. D'aww.

Default Re: Miscellany

Sometimes, I really don't understand people.

Okay, so, I have this 14 year-old friend, Elizabeth. Her parents are both professors here at the college. Her father, David, as far as I can tell, has exactly zero interest in either Elizabeth or her younger brother. In the years I've known them, I've never once seen him hug either of his kids, kiss them, or tell them that he loves them. Let's be blunt: I've never once seen him do or say anything to indicate that he has any interest at all in his own children.

Heck, I remember a faculty gathering a couple of years ago in which someone asked David how old Elizabeth was. He thought about it for a moment, then said that he wasn't sure. "She's twelve," I blurted out, appalled that he didn't know how old his own daughter was, and didn't seem to think it was something that he should know.

Elizabeth's mother, Danielle, sometimes seems almost as oblivious to her daughter as David is. (On the other hand, she absolutely dotes on Elizabeth's younger brother.)

Elizabeth is a smart kid who loves to read. For whatever reasons, soon after I arrived at the college, she kind of glommed onto me, and has been my best bud ever since. I take her to movies sometimes, and play video games with her, and sometimes, when she really needs to get out and away from things, we go for long walks around the campus while she tells me all about what's going on in her life. [At the moment, that largely has to do with K-Pop bands.]

Several people, over the years, have told me that I'm the closest thing Elizabeth has to a "Daddy." Heck, even some of the students have noticed, and have told me that I'm much more of a Daddy to Elizabeth than David is.

So anyway, Elizabeth plays on the girls' basketball team. This Friday, they're having a celebration for the 8th grade girls, who will be going on to high school next year. From what I've been told, this is a big deal. The girls' families are expected to come, and they're expected to give their daughter flowers. Their pictures are taken for the yearbook, and it's a big deal all around.

I found out a few other things, as well.

David's not going; he has ... better ... things to do. I mentioned to Danielle that this is a big deal for young Elizabeth, that her parents and closest friends are supposed to attend, that they're expected to bring flowers, etc. Danielle indicated that she might show up, but doesn't see it as a big deal. I pointed out to her that it would be devastating if the other girls' families were there and giving them big bouquets of flowers while Elizabeth was all alone. Danielle suggested that I was making a big deal out of nothing, and didn't see why I thought this was important.

Wow. Just ... wow.

So, I went to a local florist today and ordered a bouquet of roses. By the gods, come Friday night, I will be there, standing by Elizabeth's side and handing her a big bouquet of flowers.

Honestly, some people probably shouldn't be parents.

Elizabeth had a good night, I think. Danielle did come, as it happens, and stood by her daughter's side. Of course, she didn't hug Elizabeth or anything, but at least she was there. She even brought some festive celebratory balloons.

Well, sort of, anyway. I later found out that one of the staff members at the school bought them and gave them to Danielle to present to Elizabeth. Still, Danielle did show up to support her daughter.

I gave Elizabeth some roses, a big teddy bear, and a big hug. Later, one of Elizabeth's teachers came over to tell me how happy she was that I'd done so.

At one point in the basketball game that followed, a player from the opposing team knocked the ball out of bounds right in front of where I was sitting. Elizabeth was the home player selected to return the ball. As she came running up, she locked eyes with me and broke out into a smile -- the kind of smile that just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

So, a good day, if you ask me.
