Re: Miscellany
I went out to go pull in patio chairs and a few potted plants to get ready for the wind we are forecast to get from tropical depression Sally tomorrow. I can tell you right now that walking across broken acorns barefoot feels reminiscent of fakirs walking across nails.

Why Is Everything Sold Out Right Now? - The Atlantic
I was just thinking the other day that I can kind of sympathize with people who are adopting crazy theories right now. Their world seems to be falling down around them in so many different ways all at once. And to people who don't keep informed on politics and the news and such, it must seem like the pandemic, the civil unrest, the crumbling of institutions they depend on, and all that are all just coming out of nowhere, so it must be one single crazy event happening rather than a domino effect that started with outcomes that we've been warned about for ages.

I suspect it's a confidence thing, like the great stock market crash. Take off the lid and give it a poke, and a lot of the money everyone owed everyone else didn't actually exist. One broken promise breaks ten other people's promises, until the whole thing unravels. Except not money this time, but food, which is a somewhat frightening thought. Playing financial chicken with someone else's money is bad enough, but someone else's food!

That's the "just in time" delivery model. The supply chains broke down. Producers don't have a system in place to handle unexpected surges, and those surges create panics that last beyond temporary shortages.
There were a ton of flour mills and such that only sold direct to businesses, and didn't have even the packaging, much less the basic mechanics, to supply directly to individuals. There were some restaurants and bakeries and other businesses that had an existing framework that they were able to adapt on the fly to sell to regular people, but not enough. Not many flour mills or local farmers even had something in place to adapt to a completely different business model like that. Last I looked, a couple local flour mills were trying to get something up and running, but I stopped looking once I got the flour I needed.
Some bigger restaurants and bakeries and such were able to pivot to repackaging and selling ingredients and cleaning supplies direct to customers, because most of them already had some kind of online ordering system or something. Little independent restaurants and such weren't as prepared to make big changes like that, though.
There's also the fact that that one guy raised tariffs on Mexican produce last year, which is partly responsible for the recent tomato shortage, among other things. Combine that with people cooking at home more and buying more groceries, AND the Walmart just in time model everyone's adopting, and it breaks the system. The food is still being produced for the most part, it's just not getting to us the way we're used to.

Ugh, yes. I hadn't even thought of it from that angle, but it's true, and it's obscene.

Re: Miscellany
When flour did begin to appear back on the supermarket shelves here, after a long absence, it's just packaged in plain transparent plastic bags. The mills and warehouses that used to sell flour in bulk to restaurants and similar took the simplest and cheapest route to the new marketplace without needing to buy and install more than the minimum amount of packaging machinery.
But one of our supermarkets is now selling bags of shelled wet boiled eggs. The bags are filled with a liquid that looks like urine. so I think this "emergency plain packaging" can go too far.

Re: Miscellany
... Randomly chosen Italian names? (I see they are Livorno and Palermo style, which are if I am not mistaken Italian towns.)
Or is someone at the manufacturer having a laugh?

Re: Miscellany
The manufacturer has others in the series, seemingly with cliché names from the regions (Günther, Carlos, Wojtek, Samir), so I would guess random.
On the other hand, it IS hunting season right now.

You have to assume that all of them have gone through some kind of surgery to yield up these meat products.
