NS, NB, PE, and NL had this thing they called the Atlantic Bubble and doing pretty well in concert. BC's not doing too shitty in terms of mortality per 100 000.

We've just received our first not quite lockdown order for small groups and aren't at hospital capacity so, seeing how it goes into the winter.

Quebec is the disaster. What the fuck are those frenchies doing? They have 21% of the population and 60% of the deaths! Their mortality rate per 100,000 is 3.5 times Ontario's and 10X+ everywhere else.

The east coast is amazing. About 2.5 million population and only 75 deaths since the beginning.

If the UK had those numbers we'd have less than 2k dead.

Covid spreading faster in England than 'worst-case scenario', documents show

Quote:
The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) says there are around four times as many people catching Covid than anticipated.
So that's fine then.

I have no idea what you are talking about. :shiftier:

Basically because my computer (not FF for a change, although I do blame FF for the double) decided to run so slow I was unable to have any idea what was happening.

All of England is about to go into a month long lockdown*

BoJo the clown was supposed to tell us all about it at 4pm. They gave the press briefings about it. Then they postponed the press conference to 5pm. Then to 6.30pm. It's now 5.30 and of course the press has already let us know everything he's going to say. Here is a conversation I had with a mate just now on whatsapp...

Slim: This has to be the most inept government to ever be in power. Complete shambles at every turn. 4pm press conference... no wait, 5 pm.... no wait, 6.30pm.... I suppose the great buffoon might shuffle his way out the front door at some point this evening
Slim: Meanwhile, the briefings they gave the press have informed us all anyway I suppose
Mate: Yeah. Why are we hearing this from Preston and the likes.
Slim: because these morons couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery

*not really a lockdown, like the first "lockdown" much will remain open and many will continue working and travelling
(smileys didn't transfer so I used the much-better-anyway :ff: ones)

MIT researchers develop an AI model that can detect Covid-19 in asymptomatic individuals

Quote:
However, early results are promising. To date, the model has been trained on "tens of thousands" of cough samples, as well as "spoken words." When researchers input new cough recordings into the model, it can accurately identify full-fledged Covid-19 infections in "98.5 percent of coughs" and 100 percent for asymptomatic individuals.

It seems that, even for people who aren't showing severe symptoms of Covid-19, the way they cough, breathe, and speak may contain small indicators that can point toward probable infection.
They're working on app.

Hard to say without more data - and I am not going to read and pretend to understand the statistical analysis plan for this one - but that seems like best anyone could have hoped for an interim readout for this protocol, and maybe even a little better. It is more infections than the planned interim which lends some robustness. (It's 94 infections among tens of thousands of subjects). If the analysis holds the primary endpoint will be easily met. Probably a little early for it, but we'll have to see subgroup analyses to bear out the results. It sounds like the study is doing ok enrolling diverse populations so far. Like AstraZeneca, Pfizer shits money and I think probably very capable of meeting manufacturing requirements. The cold-chain logistics for this particular candidate will be punishing, but that will come down to a money question. So that is good news, and I think puts Pfizer out front, Moderna not far behind. I have more doubts about Moderna's ability to deliver at scale. J&J's single dose candidate is probably the most exciting but need to see some more late phase data.

There's a very important distinction - especially for epidemiology - to make in a vaccine that prevents infection and a vaccine that prevents (severe) disease.

You might recall Florida firing a data scientist for not faking data and then smearing her.

Dr Rebekah Jones

Well, don’t worry, they have a new data “scientist” to replace her.

Quote:

Lamb, 40, is not a data scientist by trade or training. In his own words, he is “not an ‘expert.’” His public statements about the pandemic have frequently contradicted advice from public health officials, and he has dedicated much of his coronavirus commentary to undermining experts.
Governor DeathSentence Hires Denier Dipshit

Quote:

Ryan Donnelly, a former sportswriter who worked with Lamb at a sports publication in 2018, told The Washington Post in a Twitter direct message that the podcast host has no background in data analysis or epidemiology.
“He is totally unfit for the role and appears to have been hired because he enjoyed posting charts and graphs on Twitter and offering misleading analysis alongside them,” Donnelly told The Post.

But aren't they afraid it will cause Jenny McCarthy like all other vaccines do? And why aren't people going to the churches, putting all their money in the pot, getting greased up and prayed over by the elders, and getting cured by Jebus Cross like the Bibble says they will?

The family waited until the service to disclose that COVID-19 killed Edwards, though multiple Wyoming media outlets including WyoFile had inquired.

“Our family was not disclosing the illness when he was in the hospital because we didn’t want it to be politicized and we wanted to focus on his recovery,” Mitch Edwards said. Both during his father’s illness and after his death, “we wanted to be able to do what we needed to do as a family,” he said.

When Edwards was hospitalized, a reporter called the lawmaker’s wife, Glenda Edwards, the son said. His father told the family he didn’t want to disclose his illness now but would make it public after he recovered, Mitch Edwards said.

Since the pandemic’s start, both Edwards and his pastor and colleague Clem stridently opposed government measures to quell the virus’s spread. In September, Clem and Edwards were among lawmakers who questioned Wyoming Public Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist at a legislative committee meeting. Edwards echoed conservative sentiments that the virus’s impact was overblown for political reasons and would vanish after the November election.
