It all seems so inevitable with hindsight - the obsessive focus on suffering and perceived threat, on us v them, exceptional us, barely even human them.

This was one of the things it took awhile to learn, living out in conservative land, just how many adults were already so on edge that even the mere suggestion that the terrorists weren’t crack commandos hiding under everyone’s bed got me told to that I hate america. If you weren’t in a panic wanting to strike out at anyone and everyone, you hated america and all it stood for.
The sad thing is, nothing has changed. Twenty years later the same conservative areas are still so on the same emotional knifes edge that leads them to see masks as the latest terrorism. Anything to blame someone else for their panic.
The one defining feature of conservative politics is being kept scared shitless at all times.

Shrub actually did appoint Kegs to the D.C. Circuit, where he worked for 12 years before the old incontinent fat guy nominated him to SCOTUS. As our old friend Scarlatti pointed out long ago, Kegs was "a 38-year-old partisan hack whose main claim to fame is partial authorship of the world's costliest one handed magazine, the Starr Report . . . ." All that work he did getting Clinton impeached paid big dividends for ol' Kegs, to the severe detriment of everyone else.
ETA: Shrub also appointed Gorsuch to the 10th Circuit.
