A cop shot a woman (who was leading a break-in by an large, armed, and violent mob) in the face. The skin colours of the cop and the woman are contingent facts that only have relevance in a racist narrative, I think.

Nikki Haley continues to do damage control for her omission of slavery in response to a question about the causes of the Civil War last month, and on Thursday defended her response in part by noting, “I had Black friends growing up.”

Maybe that was out of context,

“If you grow up in South Carolina, literally in second and third grade, you learn about slavery. You grow up and you have, you know, I had Black friends growing up. It is a very talked about thing. We have a big history in South Carolina, when it comes to, you know, slavery, when it comes to all the things that happened with the Civil War, all of that,” Haley said at a CNN town hall here.

“I was thinking past slavery, and talking about the lesson that we would learn going forward. I shouldn’t have done that. I should have said slavery but in, in my mind, that’s a given that everybody associates the civil war with slavery,” she continued.
She pointed to her childhood growing up in the only Indian family in a small, rural, racially divided town, and said that racism was discussed more than slavery.
“It was not just slavery that was talked about, it was more about racism that was talked about,” she said. “We had Black friends, we had White friends, but it was always a topic of conversation.”

So she didn’t mention slavery because when talking to her Black friends (that weren’t at all imaginary) they mostly focused on racism, but also racism isn’t real.

School board in Virginia just voted to rename two schools after confederates.

In April, a local conservative community group, the Coalition for Better Schools, brought up the request again, pointing to citizen surveys it conducted that "indicate overwhelming support for this restoration".

These groups hold historical significance," the group wrote in a letter to the school board, and "revisiting this decision is essential to honor our community's heritage and respect the wishes of the majority."

I like how they ignore what that significance and heritage is.

Minority members of the community still recall when Stonewall Jackson High was "whites-only" and they had to be bussed to schools in adjacent counties, he said.

Black residents often live and work in towns where Confederate flags are displayed on front porches. Many of those who fly the banner defend it as a celebration of heritage, not a symbol of hatred.

Many of the Klansmen that have flown that flag would literally say the same thing.

That attitude is one of the things that really grates on my nerves when ostensibly white folks visit the South and talk about how nice it is.

It’s part because of the veneer of Southern politeness, but it’s also not recognizing racism because it’s not directed at them.

I’ve known many people who lived in some mostly white suburb of Atlanta who declared Georgia not racist.

Many of them Trump supporters these days.

I probably wrote this before, but my first clue when I lived in the Atlanta suburbs was that our subdivision was called "The Plantation". My second clue was when my black co-worker said she wouldn't drive through the area where I lived (Cumming) at night. My third clue was the show Oprah did from Cumming in 1987 which featured a bunch of white residents saying why can't black people just find somewhere else to live.
