News Google News

I did a search and couldn't find a thread with this title, so now there is one.

I have used Google News as an aggregator because my understanding was that it was an un-opinionated collector of whatever the top news stories are from all sources, and I liked that I could exclude garbage sources ala Fox and NY Post. However when I opened it this morning expecting the top story to be the historic UAW strike, I could barely find a story about it anywhere on the page. There was a tiny headline from The Guardian in the "Business" section near the bottom of the page, but nothing in the "Top Stories". Confused, I went to each individual news website (bbc.com, nytimes.com, wapo, usa today, al jazeera, apnews.com, etc.) and with the exception of Al Jazeera, every single site had the UAW strike as the #1 story on their home page. Meanwhile, Google News says:

What the hell?

Oh, and the top story in the "US" section?

I have Hurricane Lee, Republicans fighting with each other, and corruption in China. Nothing about the UAW.

"I think the problem that we've had is that people decided they didn't really want to work so much anymore through COVID and that has had a massive issue on productivity. Tradies have definitely pulled back on productivity.

They have been paid a lot to do not too much in the last few years and we need to see that change. We need to see unemployment rise. Unemployment has to jump 40-50% in my view. We need to see pain in the economy. We need to remind people that they work for the employer, not the other way around.
-Tom Gurner, rich asshole

My point being, the rich assholes the world over are terrified of a workforce engaged in capitalism rather than used to feudalism. UAW is terrifying to them.

Mines had the UAW strikes since yesterday but tucked away as a single mention in Business and I know this because I had to google who the UAW were (my first thought was that’s a weird way to spell writer guild) as the article headline made no mention at all about Auto Worker or auto companies.

On the other hand things that I couldn’t get away from to the point I just stopped reading news was that an event held on a dry lake bed, which got rain the week before the event… got rain again! (I’m still not over how so many different outlets tried to force a story into existence.)

Day two of the historic strike, what does Google News have to tell me today?

Dropbox - Screen Recording 2023-09-16 at 8.13.17 AM.mov - Simplify your life

tl;dr : one tiny headline from CNN about how the strike might upset "the economy".
