Yeah, definitely in the category of "Breaking: XYZ was still alive!" for me too.
Speaking of which (whom?) Dick Van Dyke is still alive! In before the inevitable bad news.

Norman Lear was on my shortlist of humans who might actually be immortal, up there with Mel Brooks. I guess not.

David Drake (sci fi author)
Not sure he's all that famous, but he's certainly someone I've heard of a few times.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Of Drake's stuff, the Belisarius series is often the best-regarded, sort of an alternate-history AU thing in which time-travelers are trying to rewrite history, and Belisarius ends up working for the relatively-good ones. Basically ancient-era warfare x heist movie.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Andre Braugher. His resume is longer than my arm, but I knew him best from Brooklyn 99, Men of a Certain Age, and Bojack Horseman.
Truest thing I ever heard on a podcast: Avery Brooks went to the Andre Braugher school of acting and got a C.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Tommy Smothers of the Brothers fame, has passed away.
" Comedian Tom Smothers, who with his brother performed as the singing comedy duo the Smothers Brothers, has died, according to a family statement shared by the National Comedy Center.
He was 86.
Dick Smothers, Tom’s younger brother and professional partner, said his brother was at home at the time of his death related to cancer.
“Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner,” Dick Smothers said in a statement. “I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed.” "

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
British actor Tom Wilkinson, known for ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Michael Clayton’, dies at 75
The guy was the ultimate "Supporting Actor"
He had a knack for making all his cohorts look better.
I was just watching the series HBO did on Samuel Adams, where Mr Wilkinson portrayed Benjamin Franklin. He did a remarkable job.

The hockey player who topped the league’s points totals with only three goals in the season. The rest were assists. (All that and only ten penalty minutes.)

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Just found out about two other great musicians who died in 2023. One was Carla Bley. She was a giant in the free jazz movement back in the 1960s, but I first heard of her in 1981 when she and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd did an album together. Bley wrote all the songs, and yes, that is in fact Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine on lead vocal.
The other was Jim Gordon, a favorite drummer back in the day. Terrible story. He developed schizophrenia and didn't get proper treatment for a long time because it was misdiagnosed as alcoholism. In 1983, he killed his aged mother in ghastly fashion. The defense asserted that he did it because of the schizophrenia. Didn't prevent a conviction, but he got an indeterminate 16-to-life sentence. Multiple parole applications were denied, though, and he died in prison.
But before all that shit happened, holy fuck, check out that discography!
